When you're a fan, sometimes the price tag isn't the be all and end all.

That seems to be the case for the new owner of 17 Sprott Road in the Auckland beach suburb of Kohimarama.

The four-bedroom luxury home sold last week for $4.9 million - a whopping $1.6 million over its 2017 council valuation.

Ray White agents Ross Tierney, who marketed the property along with colleague Andrew Fava, told OneRoof that the buyer was a huge fan of the architect who designed the home.

“This particular purchaser was very fond of the architect and a little bit obsessed with the boxy, minimalist design and wanted to secure it,” he says.

The house was to be auctioned but the buyer made an offer the vendor couldn't refuse.

The $4.9 million sale price is well above the median value of properties in Kohimarama but is the highest sale price recorded in the suburb so far this year.

The post-lockdown housing market in Auckland has seen some notable sales.

Last week a clifftop home in neighbouring Remuera and marketed by Barfoot and Thompson agents Alex Baker and Stephen Rendell sold for $8 million - a hefty $2.4m above the CV and that suburb's highest sale price this year.

And a more modest three-bedroom home in Onehunga sold for $1.6 million, also well above its council valuation, with 10 bidders fighting it out in the auction room
