The former reality TV star, better known as Big Dyls, hung up his toolbelt on The Block NZ nine years ago, but hasn't quit the home improvement game.

He's got his own "mini-Block" to complete now that he and his wife Libby have sold their resort-like family.

The couple spent the last two years building their dream home in Taradale, Napier, with their two young children, Bloem and Oakley, helping out.

But just months after finishing the Warwick Terrace property, they felt an uncontrollable itch to take on another project.

They put the house on the market and eventually found a buyer, a young professional couple looking for a family home in the area.

While the sale price of around $1.5m was several hundred thousand dollars below their “dream price", Cossey said they “still made a decent amount of coin”, enough to embark on their next project.

The Cosseys had both grown up on rural blocks so had been looking for an old wool shed or barn in a rural setting near Napier to convert. They also wanted their kids to have a bit more space.

When a friend offered to sell them a 4057sqm section with views on Seafield Road, in Eskvalley, they changed their plans.

Because the settlement date on their Warwick Terrace home might be brought forward by almost a month, they have just three weeks to complete a transportable home for them to live in.

Fortunately Cossey had already started building a transportable home in his yard so instead of using it as a show home for his transportable home business, Shax, he is keeping it for himself.

Christmas was spent packing all their possessions into a shipping container and they are now frantically trying to finish the 50sqm house before it is wheeled off to its new home at the end of the month.

Libby is spending this week painting the exterior and Cossey is putting up the Gib for the ceiling.

“We love a challenge. There’s nothing like pressure – pressure is a great motivator,” Cossey said.

“We might be living in a tent for a little bit, but we are going balls to the wall to get it done.”

The Cosseys will live in the cosy one-bedroom home while they build their new four-bedroom family spread just metres away.

“We can’t quite fit our Californian king (bed) in there so we’ve gone for a king. We are all going to be in one room, but it works. We’ve done some measurements and put some tape on the floor.”

Both homes would have the same coastal vibe as their current Taradale property, which they love.

But this time around they were clear on their plans and were using it as a stepping stone to their next property. Cossey hoped to complete the build by August and sell it by the end of 2025.

One of the things that Warwick Terrace had taught them, he said, was that they weren’t ready to move into a forever home. “We are just too driven. It’s just so exciting doing what we do. We just love creating homes and spaces. That’s our jam – it’s really addictive.”

The Cosseys are still holding on to their dream of a rural life and already have their sights set on a 8093sqm section, which has been chopped off a farm in Poraiti.
