Sitting proud on its elevated 900sqm site, this classic 1910s bungalow immediately won the hearts of current owners Stephanie and John, when they were looking for a future family home, 15 years ago.

Stephanie says that it needed some work, but the fire was going in the kitchen, which was incredibly appealing, and the couple were soon sold on the property.

She and John proceeded to rip out carpets, paint walls and restore the tired pool – bringing the entire property back to life. Their preferred “classical” style underpins the décor throughout.

“We weren’t too concerned about being on trend, but you could easily make it more modern if that’s what you like.”

After their children came along this was indeed a perfect property.

“I liked being able to stand at the bench and keep an eye on them while they were splashing in the pool,” she says.

John quickly discovered a love for gardening and Stephanie says that he is responsible for all the lush green plantings that surround the beautifully presented house.

Over the years the couple have upgraded the kitchen and bathrooms.

The open-plan kitchen and family room allows the adults to carry on inside while also keeping an eye on the children splashing in the pool outside.

The classic 1910s bungalow with a floorplan of 203sqm has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a double garage, and sits on 900sqm of land.

“I think that the kitchen is the real ‘wow’ for me,” says Stephanie.

It segues into the large open-plan family room while there is also a separate dining room and formal living room.

The master bedroom lies behind the appealing round bay window at the front of the house and shares a bathroom with the other three bedrooms. There is a further bedroom by the patio which is perfectly located for dripping-wet children coming in from the pool.

1A Kelvin Road in Remuera, Auckland, is on the market for sale by auction on August 31. The four-bedroom, two-bathroom property has a 2021 CV of $2.775 million and, according to OneRoof data, last changed hands in 2009 for $1.2m.

Paul Dodds, from Ray White Parnell, is marketing the property and says that feedback from potential purchasers has been extremely positive.

“It has the advantage of being situated in a single house zone so there’s no danger of a bunch of townhouses popping up next door.”

Homeowner Stephanie says: “We’ve loved it here, but after 15 years we just feel it’s time for a change. We’re looking forward to trying something new.”

Dodds says that while the home is extremely liveable exactly as it is, there’s lots of potential for adding value – perhaps by extending out – or even going up.

“It has a strong sense of grandeur and presence, and people really like the excellent indoor-outdoor flow and the flat section. The family-friendly appeal also includes the fact that it’s zoned for Meadowbank Primary School,” he adds.

Stephanie says that the house has been the scene of many happy occasions with family and friends. “There’s plenty of space to have the sport on TV in one room while I enjoy a wine with my friends in another – or out on the deck.”

Her children, who are now 12 and 10 years old, attend Sacred Heart and Baradene schools, and with Upland Road just around the corner there are plenty of options for their parents’ morning coffees. The nearby supermarkets and various stores of Lunn Avenue are also easily accessible.

“We’ve loved it here, but after 15 years we just feel it’s time for a change. We’re looking forward to trying something new,” Stephanie says.
