The most property-obsessed country in the world - that would have to be New Zealand, right?

After all, with all the time we spend not talking about rugby and cricket talking about house prices, mortgage rates and renovations, we'd have to be top of the league tables?

However, when it comes to global standards, there's fanaticism and there's Fanaticism with a capital F.

Research from HSBC identified those living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United States as clocking up the most hours per week researching the property market, 6.6 and 4.95 hours, respectively.

Australia - a nation that most Kiwis would judge as being as obsessed about the value of their home as they are - ranked seventh on the list, with the average Aussie spending 2.51 hours a week studying the property market.

France came last in the rankings, averaging just 1.74 hours on "la marché du logement".

So where's New Zealand on the list? Unfortunately, we didn't make the cut, with HSBC advising OneRoof that New Zealand wasn't one of the 10 countries surveyed.

Which is an outrage, because no one can be house-obsessed than us.

OneRoof editor Owen Vaughan believes property websites such as OneRoof have deepened Kiwi love of the housing market. "Whether or not we are actively in the market to buy or sell, Kiwis do tend to spend a lot of their time looking at property listings and reading articles about how the market is performing.

"The wealth of data now available has made easier for us to navigate the housing market but also to go deeper - and, as a result, spend longer obsessing about homes."

The HSBC survey was conducted online between November 11 to December 5 last year, capturing the views of 11,932 people aged 21 years or older.
