Winter maybe closing in and if you’re lucky, you can book your escape to the sun in a tropical resort. Or you could plunk down a few million to live the high life, right here at home, every day
The city resort
International ad man Kevin Roberts would have seen a classy resort or two in his time. So when he designed his Remuera home in the 1990s for his then teenage family, he had an idea of what to do with the 3500 square metres of property edging the bush in the heart of Remuera. Naturally there’s a tennis court (many a famous All Black or sailor has played there), an indoor squash court that doubles as an art gallery, a gym and bar area, but it’s the swimming pool area that wows visitors and extended family.

The Roberts family’s extensive collection of modern art features around the pool and there’s more rustic charm below with a woodland fairy garden for the grand-children. You’ll never need to leave town. The property, which has a CV of over $12 million, is marketed for price by negotiation by Richard Hart and Colleen Strachan of Unlimited Potential Remuera.

The seaside panorama
On the western side of the city, Barfoot & Thompson’s Felicity Scott and Carl Madsen are marketing another modernist pad – this time inspired by New York’s Guggenheim Museum – that hovers over the views of the glittering city waterfront and marina at St Marys Bay. Everything is cool, white and sculptural, including the pool area, surrounded by lush gardens.
Naturally it is solar heated, there’s a pool house and barbecue for entertaining. And, to warm up first, there’s a tennis court – or a great walk around the lovely Westhaven Promenade and into Wynyard Quarter and the Viaduct.

The classic dame
If classic old-school glamour is more your thing – think poolside at a grand country house, complete with stone walls and clipped hedges – then Gary and Vicki Wallace of Bayleys Remuera may have your spot.
The period-look solid masonry house is a roomy 657 square metres set on a surprising garden park of over 3500 square metres, yet only three minutes from Mount Eden village. The pool is classic rectangle that fits with the gracious columns and shutters of the house, and has views over leafy suburb from its elevated site. The property, which has a CV of $8.4 million, is for sale by price by negotiation.

The health spa
A spreading home of over 550 square metres on a double section of 1750 square metres, this Malcolm Hislop-designed property hints at grand California-style, the entire house designed to wrap around the pool. It’s heated and adjoins a lovely roofed cabana for lounging, a full gym pavilion for working out. There’s sun, harbour views, room for an art studio. Gary and Vicki Wallace are expecting interest around the $5 million mark.

The tropical country spread
A spreading mid-century style house on a country-sized 2 hectare property right next to Coatesville village has been a family hub – complete with country-style accoutrements of a self-contained granny flat, a further minor dwelling, a gym, tack room and washbay for the ponies, a tennis court and more (the land is fenced into five paddocks).
But it is the lush tropical gardens that surround the heated swimming pool that really call to you, complete with stunning stone terraces, an in-ground spa and entertaining areas. Bayleys Albany’s Ailsa McArthur is marketing the home, which has a CV of $4.1 million.
