While Auckland waterfront properties get snapped up for millions in Akitio a cute bach, complete with a retro caravan, could be yours for offers over $295,000.
The coastal community on the lower east coast of the North Island, about an hour from Dannevirke, used to be the port for shipping wool from the huge sheep stations in the district. Now it is best known for the surf club and the paua, crayfish and game fish caught off the point.
The agent marketing the property, Robynne Cload, of Property Brokers, says the two-bedroom bach is a perfect getaway three and a half hours' drive from Wellington.

The freehold property has a 2017 CV of $270,000 with bach’s value sitting at $115,000.
The main bach has a kitchen, a bathroom with a laundry, a living area opening onto the covered deck with stunning views out to the ocean.
The covered deck connects the living area to a newly built annex with two fully insulated double bedrooms. There’s an aerobic waste water treatment system.
The vintage caravan on site can sleep up to four people.
The property, sitting on 1071sq m of land with a lot of unoccupied elevated space at the back of the house, has the requisite pohutukawa trees for summer, other native trees and plenty of birdlife.
Cload says that Akitio is a relatively unspoilt location that is not built out like many other beach towns. The town has about half a dozen permanent residents but is packed in the summer.
“You can go kayaking, surfing, diving and fishing – a lot of fishing goes on here for snapper and crayfish."
The same agent is marketing a 109sq m bach with a CV of $231,000 just down the road on 48 Akitio Esplanade.
“This funky bach has plenty of space to spread out and just have fun,” Cload says.
The place stays warm in the winter with a central wood burner and it has two double bedrooms, a bathroom, a separate toilet and a laundry room.
The current owners are also adding a caravan as an extra sleep out as a bonus to a sale.
