First impressions count and your front door is one of them.
Do you want to make a bold statement and stand out on your street or match the door to your personality?
We’ve talked to experts to find out what door designs are trending in 2020 and what they reveal about the occupant.
Interior designer and colour consultant Fiona Small from Sienna Design says a front door should reflect your personality but work with the overall home exterior.

“Make it a bit different. It’s a hint of who the occupants are, and if you get sick of your door colour it’s a lot easier to change it than the roof or weatherboard.”
A red door was a big trend a couple of years ago, becoming especially popular among villa owners, Small says.
In Chinese culture red means good luck and many Chinese homeowners paint their doors this colour to welcome good fortune into the household.
Villas also have wooden doors which means you can always repaint and switch things up.
“There was time when a red door was the one but there are so many lovely relevant colours out there,” Small says.
Relevant colours this year are all shades of blues and deep greens, she adds.
“A lot of the new houses are aluminium, so you are limited to the colour and you tend to work with the joinery. But I think even with the aluminium system a wooden door still looks lovely.”
A colourful door provides a “wow effect” and make your house stand out.
Make sure the colour works well with or adds to the exterior palette of the house — the roof, window frames and the paving.
“You can have a bright orange door if you want to, as long as it’s a tone of orange that will work with your colour scheme as well as exerting a bit of personality.”
If a bold colour is too much, then you can make your door stand out by choosing a personalised door handle.
Lexi Prebble, of Altherm, says a shiny glass plasma door as an entrance is a bold statement, especially if it is in a bright colour.
As the red door trend dies down, the new hot colours are dark mint and pounamu green.
“People who pick peculiar coloured doors, for example bright yellow or red, they know exactly what they want. They normally want a glamorous entrance and they want to have a big impact on that first impression,” Prebble says.
When the house entry has a wide frame, owners opt for a wide door rather than two double doors, Prebble says.
A classic trend is to have a wide, neutral-coloured glass door, while the “timeless” look of a black, white, or silver door made of a large vertical panel is taking over, Prebble says. These are favoured by“the kind of people that are trying to blend in but also be fancy.
“They are the kind of people who have all beige bedrooms.”
