An old church deep in the Motueka river valley, an hour and a half out of Nelson, is potentially sitting on a gold find.
Ray White agent Fay Stoker, who is marketing the rural property, says Tapawera has great gold mining history, with gold first found in the Motueka River valley in 1859.
The property, a disused church on the Tadmore Glenhope Road, which runs between Nelson and Murchison in the Tasman region, can be yours for offers over $125,000.
The delightfully vintage former church was last sold in 1992 for $13,000 and has a current CV of $109,000.

Stoker says that the vendor believes the small church is almost sitting on a gold deposit.

“There’s an old historical bend on the river with a supposedly sizeable gold deposit on the property going by historical terms,” Stoker says.
Clearly word has gotten around, as Stoker says that less than a day after listing the remote property, she had already received over 40 enquiries from potential buyers.
Alternatively, it could be a goldmine for the modern age: a place for tiny homes. The old church is sitting on a freehold 1088 sq m piece of land, rural zoned for residential use, which Stoker says is an ideal site for tiny home lovers to settle in.
“One of the main things people with motor homes miss when they travel is the piece of land that they own and can go back to, have a sleep on a decent-sized bed, sit on a sofa and watch TV, play pool and use it as a base.”
Stoker says the 80 sq m church built in 1914 “needs some serious attention”.
The 80sq m residence was last used as a church about 40 years ago. The agent says it would be a great base for tiny home on wheels. Photo/ Supplied.
She hopes the new owner to keep the sentimental value of a church, which hasn’t been operating for the past 40 years.
“I can see the main body of a church to be turned in to a living and dining area and the bit out the back to be made into a bedroom with a little bathroom in it.”
The Tadmor-Glenhope Rd location is surrounded by farms and is a playground if you’re into fishing, hunting or stargazing.
While being rural the place is just 9kms away from Tapawera township with services, a pub and shops handy.
