When a couple had their fourth child this double Grammar-zoned Greenlane home provided the potential and location to meet their growing family’s needs.
One of its owners, Nicki, says: “When I walked through this house and saw the way it opened up at the back looking out over trees in the neighbourhood I thought ‘oh wow, this isn’t what I was expecting.’
Nicki and her husband bought here 16 years ago, needing a bigger home than the one they had nearby after their daughter was born, joining their three sons.
The house at 121 Wheturangi Road, Greenlane is being marketed by Steen Nielsen of Ray White.

Their significant renovations converted the circa 1920s bungalow from four bedrooms to either five bedrooms-plus-study or six bedrooms, adding a front garage and heated swimming pool.
Nicki says: “Living here has absolutely made life easier juggling the schedules, schooling and all the sports and activities of four children.
“If you have to drop children off to absolutely everything it’s a nightmare.”
She appreciated the children’s 10-minute walk to nearby Cornwall Park District School and the boys being about two blocks from buses to Auckland Grammar. Being so close to Cornwall Park’s greenery worked well as the boys playing both cricket and rugby within its grounds.
Nicki says: “The other mothers had to put their grubby boys in their cars after practice at Carlton Rugby Club whereas my muddy boys easily walked home.” She’s loved so easily nipping to Newmarket or Remuera, onto the motorway or to the airport.
Double off-street parking fronts the double garage of this smartly classical, fully fenced home. There’s level lawn out the front of the home which enjoys a sense of elevation at rear as the land drops away to allow a significantly sized downstairs.
Nicki really likes the sunny rear open-plan kitchen-living-dining with native timber floors, opening to wrap-around decks overlooking the pool.
“It’s private and you can open up all the doors and hear the birdsong.
“In winter you can see out to the towers along Remuera Road.
“I grew up on a farm and I’d really struggle with not being able to see into the distance a bit.
“The lounge next door is nice too, with its fireplace pumping out great heat in winter when we’re watching rugby.”
The big rear deck steps down to the lower deck with spa pool which extends swimming pool use as children jump from one to another. Retaining has achieved further level lawn in the backyard.
The layout worked well when they wanted younger children close to upstairs’ master suite with ensuite and walk-in-wardrobe and later when they wanted to give them space. There’s a family bathroom and two more bedrooms on this level with the option of one being used as an office.
Downstairs has a further three bedrooms, - two opening outdoors to a level patio area - a bathroom and laundry arranged by a sizeable third living area opening outdoors.
“Even recently when the boys returned during university holidays lots of their friends congregated around here. You would not believe how many people you can fit in this house.”
Nicki says this property has been perfect for getting their children through primary and secondary schooling but those days are almost behind them.
Ray White agent Steen Nielsen says: “It’s rare to find a six-bedroom house with three living areas and I’d called this a ‘forever house.’”
