A huge beach-front section in Tauranga's Mt Maunganui has hit the market for the first time in more than 70 years.

The 1,548 sqm site at 223 Oceanbeach Road was originally bought by two local brothers, John and Phil Bateman, for 200 pounds in the late 1940s and has stayed in their families' hands ever since.

Bayleys Mt Maunganui agent Sharon Hall, who is selling the property by way of tender, closing September 3, said she had had enquiries from local buyers and expats looking to return home.

“I’ve had a lot of interest from purchasers who see value in the architecturally designed main house and the original bach," she said.

“As far as finding a safe port in the global storm – this property is unsurpassed.”

The main house, an architecturally-designed four-bedroom home, offers panoramic views out over the golden dunes of Mt Maunganui Beach and on towards Mayor and Motiti Islands. It includes a large chef’s kitchen with a central island opening out to the living and dining areas.

Hall said the original bach was built in 1949 by John Bateman for the sum of 55 pounds and was preserved by successive generations of the Bateman family. In fact, the current owner's parents choose to leave it intact when building the larger family home at the front of the property.

“This has been a much-loved family holiday home,” Hall said.

Oceanbeach Road is one of Tauranga's most sought-after addresses, due to its proximity to the beach. Large sections on the strip don't come up for sale that often, but when they do they tend to fetch high prices.

The third most expensive property sold this year in Tauranga was on Oceanbeach Road and went for $3.5 million.
