A former Russian politician is selling a luxurious five-level hill side mansion in Wellington for $5.5 million.

If it sells for that price, the sprawling 950sq m property will become the city’s top sale.

The house at 19 Montieth Grove, Brooklyn has seven-bedrooms and five bathrooms and stretches across a large 2278sq m section with panoramic views of the city.

The Sotheby's NZ International Realty agent marketing the property Ben Hawan says this unique property will require a unique buyer and will be sold by negotiation.

“The vendor is a Russian chap and funnily enough we’ve had a lot of Russian enquiries and quite a few enquiries from India as well.”

Hawan says people either absolutely love the design of the house or it’s not for them.

According to OneRoof records, the median sale price in Brooklyn, about ten-minute drive from Wellington Central is $902,500. The CV for the house at 19 Monteith Grove is over $5 million pre-renovations.

The most expensive residential property sold in Wellington was a six-bedroom property on Clive Road, which sold for $5.75 million in March this year.

"When it sells it’ll be in the top five per cent of Wellington for sure, especially for Brooklyn,” Hawan says.

The vendor purchased the property as a two-level house built in 2003 and spent over $5.5 million to fully renovate the property.

The lower two level can be configured as two standalone apartments with a seven-bedroom house being suitable for a large family, Hawan says.

The design for a five-storey mansion which has a glass cable car connecting all levels, was influenced by Californian architecture with Italian marble, South African hardwood floors, Persian rugs and antique British furniture.

The seven bedrooms are configured as five luxury suites, each complete with a private lounge and kitchenette bathrooms.

The owner ran a business with boutique lodge short-term accommodation with suits costing between $1650 and $3290 per night.

The lodge provided privacy for international travellers with upscale demand, business corporate, actors and celebrities, its website says.

The property has resort-like bar, theatre, gym and billiards room, indoor heated pool and a spa with steam rooms. Surrounding the estate is a private botanical garden and a wide variety of native plants and waterfalls.

The mansion is overlooking the city from each level but from Monteith Grove it’s a “little secret”, Hawan says.

“You’ll never know it’s there from the street and you hear a lot of people say they didn’t know there were houses like this existed in New Zealand but there’s one right here in Wellington,” he says.
