An expat Kiwi living in Hong Kong paid for $3.715 million for a four bedroom villa in Auckland’s Parnell.

The house, which had not been on the market in 29 years, sold at auction for nearly $1 million above its 2017 CV.

Bayleys agent, Fleur Denning, said the property at 19 Avon Street was unique for the area and had proved popular with families, with 95 groups through the open homes.

Competition for the property was intense, with four registered bidders, including the expat, all fighting to secure it. Bidding started at $3 million and quickly jumped up to $715,000 within the space of four minutes.

Parnell has been a hotspot over the last three months, with families and downsizers all seeking to get a foothold in tightly held suburb.

“There’s a huge amount of demand for Parnell at the moment. It’s small and tightly held. It’s a good suburb for all ages and stages,” she says.

Denning says the buyer loved the house was on one of the main streets in the suburb but also has a private section.

“It has a really nice north west garden and the land size is 609sqm. Most houses on that street have only about 300sqm,” she says.

Another Parnell property that Denning sold under the hammer today was 3/15 Birdwood Crescent. The four-bedroom townhouse sold for $2.15 million - $525,000 above its CV.

Denning says the family who won the auction loved the style of the house and its location – it’s close to schools and childcare.

"What they paid was a fair price for both parties,” she says.

The house was a finalist in the 2018 NZ Interior of the year Awards. It has a fireplace and book shelves up to the ceiling and features a library ladder.
