The family, who had been looking for a while since returning to New Zealand from overseas during the lockdown, said the price was “irrelevant” as it was their dream home.
Bayleys agent Joan Barton, who marketed the two-storey house, said it had proved incredibly popular with buyers, so much so she received a pre-auction offer of $1.8 million from one.

She had 15 requests for private viewings the day after she listed the property two weeks ago and had 50 groups through on the first open home.
The 12 bidders at the auction included developers, locals and expats, including the family who made the winning bid.

Barton said of the new owners: “They’ve been looking for a while and said it was their dream home. The site, the location by the beach and the schooling opportunities - all were draw-cards for them.
“In their words, the price was irrelevant because it’s their forever home.”
She said the family was planning to live in the house as is while they decide on future renovations.
The house had been in the hands of the same family for 40 years and the listing photos show it still had many of its original features, including the brown and yellow kitchen and patterned wallpaper.
Barton said the vendor, who built the house, was stunned with the auction result and was now going to a retirement home.
