If you have been browsing your local bricks-and-mortar shops or online stores recently, you would have noticed a marked shift in colours designers are using.
It is the time of the year when colour palettes transition to the summer 2020-21 range.
But as exciting as it is to see fresh colours, but it can sometimes be overwhelming to navigate what bits of the new season’s palette work for your home. Remember that just because the stores are showcasing these colours, it does not mean you have to follow them.
Here are the new seasons colour trends and some ideas for how you can bring them in to update your home but still suit you.

Captivating 1970’s autumnal colours have crept into the new season collections. This means muted moss greens, paired with mustardy yellows (that yellow that we Kiwis call Karitane), along with a sprinkle of muted raspberry shades and dusty or distressed navy.
To soften these colours and tie it all together we are seeing the caramels and camel beiges continue as a neutral.
If you are starting with a blank slate, this palette is classic.
To keep the 70s tone fresh for a summer look, pair with crisp whites and dusty blues and greens. Then as autumn comes along, dot through the raspberry and mustard yellow for a warmer feeling.
If you use the deeper tones, it will even work for winter with its snug feeling.

It is all very well having a palette for the season ahead, but how do you introduce these tones into the scheme you already have?
The easiest thing we suggest to our clients is to buy only cushions that have zips. That way you can refresh your lounge by simply changing the cushion colours as you move through the seasons. Rotating the cushion covers will also keep them looking fresher and protect them from wear and tear.
We also like a couple of coloured throw rugs to add an extra pop to an interior, and are great fans of linen - we think you can never have too many linen options!
In a bedroom, try mixing up pillowcases, duvet covers or swapping out a comforter with different weights and tones of colour. Then use ornaments, vases and pictures to really help lock in a colour scheme.
But if you really want to make a splash with this season’s trends, go all in with these colours in paint and wallpaper.
Use wallpaper to introduce patterns which bring all these colours together in a print. Then follow the tones through with soft furnishings.
But, as always, your home is individual. So pick and choose which parts of the new on-trend palette work with the existing colours in your home to freshen up your style from season to season - but still be true to you.
