Creating a dream interior from a distance and working around 2021 lockdowns has been an ongoing challenge for our expert interior designer Hayley Brown, founder of award-winning Lou Brown Design. However, she has risen to the occasion, coming up with a stunning scheme for professional nail and make-up artist Lynette Fray’s beauty room, which is located at her home on a lifestyle block in Stratford.

Lynette, a former dairy farmer, who nurtures a great love for all aspects of the Kiwi great outdoors, is embarking on a change of pace that will hopefully allow more time for her to spend with her young family.

She says that her new career as a nail and beauty artist, working from home, and already attracting an impressive clientele, is a dream-come-true and now – thanks to Guthrie Bowron - it’s about to become even more dreamy, as she embraces Hayley’s exciting plans for her enhanced beauty room.

Hayley agrees that Covid-19 has thrown up a few roadblocks, but she’s still managed to finish a carefully designed, personalised 3D visual board, complete with rendered imagery, which makes Lynette’s new beauty room practically come to life on the screen.

“There were a lot of important aspects for me to consider, given the nature of Lynette’s business,” Hayley says.

She explains that although Lynette is very careful, she does specialise in nails, make-up and spray tan, so occasionally things will spill, which is why she has chosen the Lisbon rug, in colour ‘Onyx’, by Weave, to lie over new Clix Plus laminate flooring, in colour ‘Lightning Natural Oak’.

“It’s half jute, in keeping with Lynette’s fondness for earthy items, but the rug also incorporates strips of contrasting black wool, which helps to disguise any accidents until she’s able to vacuum it, at the end of the day!”

Because Lynette likes shades that are simple, with pops of bold colour to make a statement, Hayley has chosen a nature-inspired theme using textured wallpaper with a grass-cloth look for three of the room’s walls, complemented by an eye-catching diversion on the other in the form of a striking Feature Wall Mural from the ‘Komar Pure’ collection.

“Although Lynette is very down-to-earth in her style and taste, she still appreciates an injection of bold pattern and colour to keep things interesting,” Hayley says.

Black velvet drapes bring a touch of glamour - hung over venetian blinds that were installed to help Lynette control light levels – an integral issue in any beauty space.

Meanwhile, Hayley has cleverly created a dedicated waiting area for Lynette’s clients, including a statement chair, occasional table and magazine rack.

In a freestanding wall unit, she has factored in ample storage for items and materials that aren’t used every day, along with a handy tea and coffee station.

“Or maybe a wine, depending on what time it is!”

Hayley has moved Lynette’s nail desk to the centre of the room, so that most of the beautician’s work is done away from the walls, although she’s left the make-up station where it stood originally, adding handy acrylic holders in order to help keep various products organised.

A statement, central pendant light-fitting - along with carefully placed downlights - help keep the beauty room bright and very easy for Lynette to work in, whatever the weather.

When it comes to accessories, Hayley has added in a faux palm tree, which looks real, but doesn’t require watering because she knows that Lynette is generally busy and time-poor.

A mustard cushion adds a welcome pop of colour, and Lynette’s nail polish collection is an attractive showcase in itself. A large wall mirror fits perfectly within the beauty vibe and a discreetly placed bedside table adds yet more subtle storage.

Once again, Hayley has really enjoyed working with Guthrie Bowron, a household name in the New Zealand decorating business with shops right throughout the country. The well-respected firm has been serving Kiwis for a very impressive 125 years and offers a wide range of quality decorating products.
