New Zealand broadcasting legend John Hawkesby sold his Waiheke Island estate for $12 million, OneRoof can reveal.
OneRoof first reported the sale of Hawkesby’s five-bedroom property overlooking Church Bay in June, but the sale price remained private until this week.
The $12m price is more than double the property’s 2021 CV and is the island’s highest so far this year.
Hawkesby told OneRoof in June that the first people to inspect the home ended up buying it.

“We wanted the people who bought it to love it like we have and we’re over the moon it’s happened that way,” he said.
Hawkesby and his wife Joyce put their vineyard home of 25 years on the market in January this year.

The Hawkesbys hired their grandson, Ray White agent Jackson Hawkesby-Lyne, to sell the property alongside Hawkesby-Lyne’s father, Richard Lyne.
The agents declined to comment on the sale price but Hawkesby-Lyne told OneRoof in June that they had had “fantastic interest” in the property.
“Ultimately, it went to the right people. They love it and want to cherish it the way Ganma and Poppa have,” he said.
Hawkesby-Lyne said the sale was the biggest of his career. “I had a real sense of responsibility to get this right for my grandparents. It’s been an absolute labour of love, given the home carries so many special memories,” he told OneRoof in June.
“I think it’s one of the best properties on the island, built by one of the best builders on the island. It’s more than a property – it’s a lifestyle, once you’re there you don’t want to leave.”
OneRoof reported in June that Hawkesby and his wife were moving off the island to the mainland.
After he left TVNZ, Hawkesby turned his love of wine into a writing career and grew Syrah vines on the property.
Hawkesby’s $12m is not the only prestige property on the island to fetch top dollar.
In April, a 1980s-era bach on Waiheke Island’s Onetangi Beach sold for $8m. The original-condition four-bedroom home, on The Strand, had a 2021 CV of $5.5m and had been in the same family for 15 years, last selling in 2009 for $1.95m.
And in March, a stylish four-bedroom house on Delamore Drive, marketed by Kellands agents Martin Dobson and Charles Collins, fetched $7.5m – $1.5m above its CV. The 1.5-hectare property included bush walks and direct access to the beach and bay.
