It’s back to the future for the couple who bought 6 Ventnor Road, in Aucklands Remuera, for just under $1 million in 1994.

They have hired the agent who sold them the four-bedroom villa in the first place, but this time around they are hoping her real estate skills get them a lot more than what they paid 30 years ago.

One of the owners told OneRoof that the house had come with challenges when they first bought it, but it was worth it

“When our agent, Leila MacDonald, first showed it to us, we could see that it was going to be a project – and a challenge,” he told OneRoof.

“I had given her a list of our requirements – including water views – and the house largely met them, but it had been split into two flats – one up and one down – since the 1950s, so we immediately had to embark on a major refit.”

He said the interiors were significantly rebuilt, with walls moved, linings replaced, insulation laid, and underfloor heating installed. The roof was also updated as were the electrical works.

The couple removed a tacked-on bedroom and relocated the main stairs, restoring the house to its original, classic self.

Other changes over the years included the addition of a new double garage, new decking and a pétanque court.

Barfoot & Thompson agent Leila MacDonald, who sold the home to the vendors 30 years ago, said it was one of Remuera’s grandest homes. “It’s in a wonderful spot and of course the views can never be built out. There’s sun all day and so much room for a family to spread out with lounges downstairs and upstairs, and fantastic indoor – outdoor flow.”

She is selling the house by way of tender, closing October 24. The 2021 CV of $6.2 million is an indication of the quality of the home and of how much prices have changed in the suburb.

The homeowners, who are selling to downsize, say they will miss the views.

The living areas are bright and airy, and the kitchen and bathrooms are smart and contemporary.

The owner said: “It really has been a wonderful home. We’ve loved the friendly neighbourhood and the privacy and the trees we planted are now well established and include a couple of avocados – which are very prolific, as well as some lovely citrus trees."

He said he and his wife would miss the views, which take in Mount Wellington through to the Coromandel on one side and Rangitoto the and Sky Tower on the other.
