The history and charm of a bach on the market for the first time in 60 years drew the crowds to tiny Scotts Landing, in Mahurangi East.

The iconic holiday home on 5000sqm on Ridge Road had been owned by the same family for four generations and has sold for more than $2 million – well above its RV of $1.325m.
Bayleys agent Kellie Bissett said those who inspected the two-bedroom bach were won over by its simplicity. “It’s a contrast to the bells and whistles in town; a little bit of yesterday,” she told OneRoof.
The property first hit the market a year so getting a deal over the line took time. “It just needed the right buyer – the shoe needed to fit,” Bissett said.
The sale price was a good example of how RVs didn’t necessarily reflect the value of these sorts of properties, she said, adding that there had been strong interest from Aucklanders.

“They just appreciated the beauty of an original bach in a location where you’re barefoot from the kitchen sink to the beach, and total privacy, yet you’re still only five or six minutes from a coffee or a café.”
The property was built in 1960 back when the area was serviced by clay roads. One of the vendors told OneRoof last year that the trip up to the bach took a lot of effort back then but was well worth it.
“We’d spend a month of summer there, in bare feet the whole time – we had to be careful collecting oysters though. I have fond memories of those times,” he told OneRoof, adding that there were beds in every corner despite being just two-bed bach.
“The peninsula is home to some original pōhutukawa forest, which is just glorious in summer. Our property has some untouched bush on it which is full of vibrant bird life. We’ve even got some plum trees that were planted by early settlers in the mid-1800s.”

For those who missed out on the bach, Bissett said fear not because she has another listing nearby, at 9 Young Street, which she said was a beautiful waterfront site with riparian rights.
“It’s a beautiful character home which has modern comforts but it’s got a boat ramp, it’s got a boatshed, it’s riparian, it’s got lawn, it’s on one acre and, again, it’s as much a weekend property as a full-time property and most of the interest has come again within an hour of the property.”
Her listing describes the house as having generous waterside decks, alfresco living and extensive views.
“A cute waterside cottage will inspire yoga, art, music or a playroom. A separate garden house, potager beds and mature gardens offer limitless leisure activities for all. Take a swim, fish, paddle board or kayak, all from your own property.”

The two-storey house was a standout with a stately architectural style, renovated to include contemporary features and modern comforts, with a striking cedar shingle exterior and copper spouting.
Inside, there is American oak flooring, a new kitchen with marble countertop, custom window shutters and ducted air-conditioning.
With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, the property has an RV of $4m and is selling by set date of sale with offers to be submitted by midday April 3, unless sold prior.
Bissett said she was seeing a lot of activity in the bach market.

“I feel there are plenty of buyers out there right now. Maybe they are wondering if they should be holding on any longer.”
She said she was getting all kinds of interest in these properties, including from wealthy Omaha owners seeking peace and privacy. “I’ve sold many of these coastal properties where people are seeking a weekend retreat.”
One such sale was of a bach on Whitmore Road, in the Tawharanui Peninsula, which had an RV of $1.55m but sold for close to $2m.
This was “another beautiful weekend beach house” at Buckleton Beach, only minutes from Matakana Village and under an hour from Auckland’s CBD.
