A multimillion-dollar home built by the first Kiwi to win the Sydney to Hobart Race is back on the market less than a year after it sold for an undisclosed sum.

Listing agent Jason Trowbridge, from LJ Hooker Ponsonby, said the buyers believed the waterside home at 16 Harbour View Road, in Auckland’s Point Chevalier, rivalled beachside properties on Waiheke Island.
However, they had had a change of heart and were looking for someone else to take on the property. “They have decided they need to spend a lot more time with family,” Trowbridge told OneRoof.

The agent said the three-bedroom home’s mid-century style was “hugely appealing”.
The house also has strong sailing kudos, starting life as the berth of Kiwi sailing legend James Davern, whose boat Fidelis made yachting history in 1966 when it won the Sydney to Hobart Race.
Davern’s extensive sailing history is reflected throughout the construction of the property; its decks are made from marine-grade timber, a boat ramp and boat house are included in the architecture, and the home is positioned right on the foreshore.

A OneRoof article from last year revealed the Davern connection and highlighted previous owners’ deep affinity for the spot.
Trowbridge said the previous owners had lived at 16 Harbour View Road for more than 50 years, and noted that the house was in good company.
OneRoof records show waterfront homes in Point Chevalier have fetched top dollar in recent years, with one large estate selling to Oscar-winning director Taika Waititi and his pop star wife Rita Ora for more than $10m.
Trowbridge said 16 Harbour View Road was “one of the rarest of offerings because it does have the riparian rights, and it’s only one of two with a private boat ramp directly into the harbour”.

“You feel like you’re sitting on top of the water from every room. Downstairs has the most lovely large games room leading into the boatshed, which has direct access to the water,” he said.
“It’s a time warp to the 70s - the wide stairs, the lovely light, bright rooms.”
He added: “The pohutukawa trees you can see clearly in the photos are just stunning. They are some of Auckland’s best, they’d be 100 years old each. You are in a majestic enclave of superior lifestyle – it’s really like being on holiday. It’s resort living on a daily basis.”
Trowbridge said there was an opportunity to add “gargantuan” value to the property. “This home could be taken well into a much higher price bracket and that’s exactly what the vendors were going to do,” he told OneRoof.
“The property offers huge scope for future development and enhancement.”
