When Harry and Carla set their sights on a property along Devonport’s waterfront, they faced the choice between a fixer-upper or a spacious apartment in the revered and historic Elizabeth House.

A decade ago, this American couple, with real estate holdings in Nevada, Italy and Hawaii, fell in love with the charm of Devonport during their visits to Auckland and decided to make this apartment their own.

According to Harry, the allure of the apartment lies in its generous size, abundant windows, and two balconies that offer panoramic views of the waterfront.

“It’s a brilliant spot for observing the ebb and flow of the tide, as well as watching yachts and other vessels on the water,” he notes.

The couple also appreciates the rich historical tapestry woven into both the suburb and the iconic Elizabeth House.

Originally designed by architect John Currie as the ‘Ventnor Private Hotel’ in 1911, the building catered to discerning holiday-makers seeking first-class seaside accommodations. In 1951, it transitioned into accommodation for the Women’s Royal New Zealand Naval Service, later becoming six private apartments in 1997.

Harry and Carla purchased their apartment with the intent of becoming New Zealand citizens and investing substantial time in this historical haven.

However, complications arose, with Carla’s cancer diagnosis delaying their renovation plans until late 2017, following her recovery. The couple managed to enjoy their meticulously renovated apartment, renewing their vows and celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with friends at a memorable high tea.

Unfortunately, the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted their international travel plans, leading them to reluctantly decide to sell this special abode.

Situated just steps from the water, the location is ideal, with vibrant cafes, restaurants, and shops near the ferry only a block away. The apartment’s rear double garage provides convenient access via a coded rear entrance, leading to the building’s beautiful original spiralling staircase.

The apartment, spanning 369sqm, boasts a front lounge-family dining area-kitchen adorned with beautiful wooden cabinetry and a walk-in pantry. Thanks to the installation of double glazing, Harry emphasizes the tranquillity of the space.

French doors open out to the front balcony, continuing around one side of this level, while a formal dining area with a powder room adjoins a rear TV lounge.

Harry points out, “That dining room used to be far bigger than needed, so we used some of it to make the office substantially bigger.”

The TV lounge and office open to a rear balcony offering views of Mt Victoria. Upstairs, the front ensuited master suite with a walk-in wardrobe and two additional bedrooms served by the main bathroom showcase extensive remodelling. A ducted four-zone heat pump system has been installed for efficient heating and cooling.

Listing agent Marissa Muirhead, of Harcourts, highlights, “Enjoying the feeling of a big home, this spacious 369sqm apartment is so special because of its location, rich history, and opulence. The blend of historical significance, meticulous renovations, and panoramic waterfront views make this property a truly unique and luxurious home.”
