A succession of owners has left their mark on this special Remuera Arts and Crafts property, which was built in the 1920s, as part of the Upland Estate, and current guardians Tori and Dave are no exception.
They undertook a significant renovation after buying the weatherboard and shingle property in 2019, which included reconnecting what had been a self-contained unit downstairs back into the house itself, while paying special attention to keeping the three-storey bungalow’s character features intact.
“We found a great craftsman who was able to replicate the banisters on the main, formal staircase so that everything was in the same style,” says Tori.
She says that she and Dave were attracted to the home by its unique aesthetic, and period touches, including the handsome arched entrance, and they have really enjoyed the sense of seclusion and privacy it offers.

“It’s a wonderful sanctuary and it was such a lovely place to be in during the lockdown periods we had a few years ago.”
72 Upland Road, in Remuera, Auckland, is on the market for sale by auction on August 14. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom property has a 2021 CV of $3.75 million and, according to OneRoof data, last changed hands in 2019 for $2.65m.
Tori is an artist, so part of the downstairs area, which includes a massive storage area, two rumpus rooms and a bedroom, has been her studio, and she says that she’s found the light, bright atmosphere very conducive to her work.
The open-plan kitchen, dining and living zone lies on the second floor and there is a huge separate lounge, complete with a bold, black period fireplace which serves as a focal point in the room, as well as striking leadlight windows.
Upstairs are two further bedrooms and a family bathroom along with the master bedroom, which has a walk-in closet and ensuite. The panoramic views from this level really stand out.
Outdoor living is very well catered for, with extensive decking and a pool, which has been the scene of many happy family occasions – including lunchtimes and evenings spent dining alfresco in summer.
Tori and Dave are now living in Central Otago and their children are at university so it’s time to cut their ties with Auckland, but she says they are sorry to be leaving Upland Road and their much-loved property, which also enjoys an English-style garden with neatly trimmed hedges and a covered carport, along with dedicated off-street parking.
“We’ll really miss the feel of it – my sister, who lives in Portugal, once said that what’s really special about it is the happy atmosphere, and I think she’s right,” says Tori.
Steve Koerber, from Ray White, who is marketing the property, agrees that the abundance of light is one of the home’s greatest attractions.
He says it’s a perfect area for families with Little Rangitoto Reserve just minutes away, and Orakei Basin practically on the doorstep.
The property is in zone for Meadowbank Primary, Remuera Intermediate School and is also double grammar zoned, with lots of private schools also on offer in the leafy surrounding neighbourhood.
