The daughter of the late owners of this landmark property close to Waiwera Beach, says that her father, a builder, bought the bush-covered 1555sqm section in the early 1980s and the family would regularly go and camp there.
After maintaining it carefully for years, her father eventually began constructing his and his wife’s dream home, with his son – who was also his apprentice – alongside to assist him.
“We kids had already left home so they essentially built this enormous property for the two of them, but my father had the idea that we might move back to look after them when they were old, which is why he included self-contained living on the ground floor,” says the owners’ daughter. “However, that never quite ended up happening.”
Set across a 488sqm floor area, the house boasts six bedrooms, all enjoying a pleasant leafy outlook. Three are on the first level, where they surround a huge central kitchen, dining and games room which opens onto a sun-drenched wraparound porch. Also on this floor are two bathrooms and a spacious home office as well as a giant basement which could be utilised in numerous ways.

On the second floor, the combined kitchen and dining space also features a sunny breakfast nook. There is a separate lounge as well as a more casual sitting room and three bedrooms along with two further bathrooms, one of which is part of the primary bedroom suite. A generous separate laundry lies beyond the internal-access triple garage.
1050 Hibiscus Coast Highway in Waiwera, Rodney, is on the market for sale and heading to auction on October 3. The six-bedroom, four-bathroom property has a 2021 CV of $1.575 million.
The owners’ daughter says that the house was built to last, and her parents were very happy there, surrounded by the lush bush and the bird life – enjoying the stunning views. With no near neighbours they relished their peace and privacy – from the road, you can only see the roof of the house.
“The birds are amazing – you even get lorikeets coming up to the deck.”
She says that Waiwera is an easy walk or a bike ride away: “My father built a little bridge over the creek so I could take my grandchildren in their pushchairs.”
Jenna Glatt, from Harcourts, who is marketing the property, says that visitors to Waiwera and Wenderholm Regional Park will have glimpsed the home while driving past, but probably have had no idea what a substantial property it is.
“People at the open homes are often quite amazed, especially because the views are so breathtaking,” she says.
“It has so many possibilities: as legal home and income, Airbnb or multi-generational living, which is quite a big thing at the moment.”
Jenna says everything about the house is oversized.
“I’ve called the bedrooms double, but they’re practically triple and the primary suite is enormous. You could move in and enjoy the property just as it is, but you could also renovate and turn it into an absolute mansion on the hill.”
She adds that the owners’ family is keen to settle and move on.
