A franchise of one of New Zealand’s most well-known restaurants is available for purchase in Taupō.

Cobb & Co., a highly recognisable Kiwi brand with origins dating back to 1973, has been delivering memorable family dining experiences for more than 50 years.

The Taupō offering is located at 29 Tongariro Street in the heart of the town’s bustling CBD that enjoys steady levels of foot traffic and excellent street exposure owing to its strategic positioning.

This restaurant can seat 240 people indoors and 60 patrons on a fully fenced outdoor deck and has continued to trade strongly despite the challenging Covid era with a notable bump in turnover during the past two years.

Hugh Milloy, Investment Sales Broker at Colliers Taupō, has been exclusively appointed to sell the business via deadline sale with offers closing at 4pm on Thursday 22 August.

The fit-out of the property has been well maintained and the commercial kitchen benefits from more than half a century of design experience from across the Cobb & Co. network.

Currently the restaurant operates from 4pm to 9pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 9pm on the weekends, which includes a breakfast service.

Milloy says there are a range of options available to prospective purchasers who might be looking to acquire a stake in a much-loved Kiwi brand.

“The flexible staff structure of the restaurant means the owner is not required to work in the business suggesting it could be operated as a passive investment,” Milloy says.

“Alternatively, the new owner may choose to be more hands-on and work in the facility.

“Cobb & Co. offers franchisees proprietary state-of-the-art restaurant management systems and processes, making this is a compelling purchasing opportunity.”

In 2019, Cobb & Co. won the Retail & Hospitality Franchise System of the Year and Excellence in Digital Innovation awards at the Westpac New Zealand Franchise Awards.

The location is one of the key selling points of this offering given its accessibility, high volumes of foot traffic, and the year-round appeal of Taupō.

The wider region is a lifestyle and adventure destination with a cosmopolitan feel that is home to major events, including motorsport, multisport, and cycling.

Halfway between Auckland and Wellington, Lake Taupō is famous for its world-class trout fishing and is surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful, unspoilt, and natural scenery.

The population of the area grew by 8.3 per cent between 2018 and 2023 according to the most recent Census data and tourism numbers continue to rebound following the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic with almost one million people visiting Taupō every year.

Milloy says the upgrades to Tongariro Street have made the Taupō CBD more user-friendly and appealing to locals and visitors.

“Reducing the street from four lanes to two has brought a slower speed zone meaning improvements for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as a substantial increase in car parking spaces.

“There are now better linkages between the CBD, Tongariro Domain, and Lake Terrace along with additional outdoor dining spaces. Some of Taupō’s most popular and well-known hospitality spots are located nearby.”
