It's a fitting time to put Hall & Hyland on the open market for the first time, as a serviceman founded the Waiuku mechanical and machinery workship on returning from World War II.

Hall & Hyland was founded by Malcom (Mac) Hyland in the 1940s along with his father-in-law, Mr Hall. Hyland became an icon in Waiuku and is still remembered today.

Dawn Engelbrecht of Link Business Brokers says the business has continued to uphold its excellent reputation throughout the district for providing good old-fashioned service.

Bob Uday, the current owner, has been with the business for 50 years.

He started as an employee before becoming Mac Hyland’s business partner in 1977.

At 81, Uday still works full-time in the business, but has now decided it is time to retire and pass on the legacy to a new owner.

Engelbrecht says, “Hall & Hyland has provided its services to the rural district of Waiuku and surrounding areas for more than 75 years. The business is deeply rooted in the community and has served generation after generation.”

Hall & Hyland operates as a mechanical and machinery workshop that offers various services, including general mechanical repairs, warrant of fitness (WOF) checks, and maintenance for cars, trucks, tractors and farm equipment.

Additionally, as a complete service centre, it specialises in light engineering, hydraulic hose replacement and ram repairs.

Engelbrecht says, “During the mid-20th century, Waiuku was predominantly a rural area but it has since grown into a thriving semi-rural location. Over the past seven decades, Hall & Hyland has established itself as the sole independent service provider for farm machinery and haymaking equipment in the Lower Franklin and Upper Waikato regions.”

This encompasses farming districts such as Pukekohe, Waiau Pa, Onewhero and the wider area.

“Hall & Hyland has become a well-respected institution in the district,” Engelbrecht says. “It is a business that operates on an old-school model.

“It relies solely on its long-established reputation and word-of-mouth referrals.”

This strategy has proven to be effective throughout the years and economic fluctuations.

“Hall & Hyland presents an exceptional opportunity for a new owner to revitalise and elevate this iconic brand. There is potential for immediate expansion across all of its services by investing in the building of a website, establishing an online presence and promoting the business,” Engelbrecht says.

“Bob has generously extended an offer to pass on the diverse range of skills he's acquired over his career. He is enthusiastic about sharing his specialised knowledge with a new owner or mechanic to ensure a seamless transfer of expertise.

“It's likely that the new owner/s will possess a mechanical background and can learn any necessary specialised maintenance or repairs.”

Waiuku, surrounded by beaches and parks, is an ideal location for families seeking a peaceful life away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The town's population has been on a steady rise, with an increasing number of people commuting to Auckland city or Manukau for work.
