The rundown property at 2 Ocean Beach Road, at Foxton Beach, made the headlines four years ago when squatters took it over.

The squatters resisted multiple attempts by the Crown to remove them but were eventually evicted in April last year, Stuff media reported.

The two-storey house, which is boarded up and has a “do not enter” sign on the gate, had been vacant since 2017. It is located next to the former Foxton Beach police station and sits on almost 700sqm of land just two streets back from the beach.

A police spokesperson said the house was used to accommodate local officers, but was no longer needed.

Management of the sale is being handled by Toitū TeWhenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).

LINZ project leader MattBradley told OneRoof that the body had assessed the property’s potential for other public uses and looked into whether or not it needed to be offered back to the previous owner or to Maori.

He said the proceeds from the sale would be transferred to the Crown.

The listing agent for the property, Leanne Fuldseth, from Property Brokers, has pitched the three-bedroom house as a “renovation” project.

The 1980s-era house can only be viewed from the street, with a report commissioned by LINZ in 2020 finding the property to be contaminated with asbestos. A single photo of a basic kitchen is the only glimpse of what the inside of the home looks like.

The property has an RV of $730,000 – $450,000 of which is land value.

The Ocean Beach Road property is one of 65 police houses currently being considered for divestment around the country but it is currently the only one for sale on the open market. The neighbouring Foxton Beach Police Station is also in the process of being divested, but it has not yet been transferred to LINZ.
