Shelford, as it has always been called, is the product of notable architect Alexander Wiseman, the man responsible for conceiving the landmark Ferry Building in Auckland’s downtown.

The architect’s work illustrated the beauty of detail in an era where designers sought to offer an antidote to industrialisation-celebrating craftsmanship and natural materials. The delightful Shelford is no exception and has managed to retain all of the character that exemplified the Arts and Crafts movement.

Epsom is known for its collection of quintessential villas and bungalows, but Shelford is a wonderful mix of both.

As you arrive at 89 Ranfurly Road in Epsom, you’re met by an extraordinary entrance, formed by a domed ceiling, an ornate brass pendant and stained glass doors signalling wings in each direction.

It’s a striking example of the workmanship and detail that defined the Arts and Crafts home. The movement was a push back to minimalism and was characterised by large porches, natural materials, low ceilings that kept the homes cosy, and without fail, a large and decorative fireplace or two.

The latter are all features of Shelford, a 289sqm home that has retained all of its original features, but with added contemporary convenience.

The kitchen, dining and lounge reside in one open space, laid with timber flooring. New, but in keeping with the home’s character, the cool white shaker kitchen offers modern appliances, ample storage, a butler’s pantry and bay window seating.

Alongside the length of the room, French bi-folding doors open to an extensive covered porch, making all-weather dining and entertaining simple.

The landscaping on the 920sqm property has been kept manicured and traditional, with mature boxed hedges and rounded topiary enveloping the home. The master bedroom is found in a separate wing. It’s a large space with a suitably large ensuite and an ornate timber fireplace as its focus.

The remaining four bedrooms are found in the neighbouring wing, all sharing the delightful detail that runs throughout the home-panelled ceilings, timber floors, stained-glass windows and generous dimensions. A separate sitting room, which can be used a library or office offers an additional retreat in the home.

The property, which will be sold at auction, is being marketed by Richard Thode and Rae Zhang of Ray White.

Thode highlights, “This is a rare opportunity to secure a home in a prime Epsom street. The north-facing property offers superb one-level living, with exceptional flow and a large entertaining deck.”

Certainly, the double-grammar zoned home is exceptionally placed on one of the suburb’s best streets with quick access to Cornwall Park, Newmarket and the shops and restaurants of Greenwood’s Corner.
