After a sophisticated expatriate lifestyle in places such as Bahrain, London and Surrey, a family fell in love with this superbly renovated Arts and Crafts home with harbour views and beach access.

Cornelius and Jo bought this splendid 1920s home ‘Anderleigh’ in 2012, with three young adult children.

Cornelius says: “We’ve moved a lot in the past and had some beautiful homes but this is the nicest one we’ve ever owned. I was out for a walk when I saw it had an open home on and walked up the driveway.

“I saw it was a different class of home, complete with large grounds, a right-of-way down to the sea and beautiful views.”

The 410sqm rendered brick home with timber shingles and a steeply pitched roof sits on 1424sqm grounds. It’s one back from the sea, looking out over a low beachfront home to the water and city.

Jo says: “Swooping seagulls tell us exactly where the whitebait is.” Yachts, cruise ships, the port’s bustle and Auckland Museum’s night lights punctuate their outlook.

Anderleigh was designed by prominent Arts and Crafts architect Gerald Jones for Alex Harvey, whose business spawned influential NZ industry AHI.

The couple who owned Anderleigh before Cornelius and Jo included an interior designer, who skilfully retained character while opening up its interior to be light-filled with modern amenities.

Cornelius says: “The slab of Oregon pine which tops the kitchen island came from one of the interior walls they removed. It’s about four inches thick, showing this house was built to last.”

Neatly clipped front greenery and an English-style front garden with manicured lawn and fountain impart a graceful air, with the home set well back.

Jo says it’s functioned beautifully as a family home, from when their own children lounged around the pool to hosting grandchildren nowadays. There’s a single and a tandem garage plus off-street parking.

The outdoorsy couple say the home’s direct north-south aspect and high steeped roof ensure that whatever the season there’s usually somewhere they can relax outside, protected from the weather.

An attractive front summerhouse’s one bedroom-one bathroom layout with kitchenette is ideal for boomeranging children.

The foyer with original American oak staircase showcases marble flooring used on this level along with parquet wooden flooring, all with underfloor central heating. The four ground-floor living areas include a formal lounge, living room and a kitchen-dining-living continuing into another lounge which opens out to the front patio.

Living areas boast three Oamaru stone fireplaces, two gas and one open. The subtly French provincial chef’s kitchen has a scullery.

Cornelius says: “In the morning we often sit admiring the garden view and in the evening, we like the view across the harbour to the city as the lights come on.”

This level also includes an office, laundry and powder room. The rear opens up, embracing the very private grounds swimming pool and alfresco entertaining area. Below the swimming pool are a gazebo with spa pool, vege gardens, a glasshouse and the walkway down to a jetty and the water’s edge.

Upstairs, the master with beautiful sea views, its own bathroom and two walk-in wardrobes is one of four bedrooms, accompanied by two more bathrooms.

The couple are moving south to be closer to children and grandchildren.

Bayleys agent Linda Simmons says: “What’s particularly special about this iconic Stanley Point property is the way it’s been opened up, creating a light-filled interior layout still oozing character but more in line with the way we live today.”
