An historic coastal homestead surrounded by farmland comes with its own chapel - as well as a swimming pool, billiard table tennis court, orchard, garden, stables and a croquet lawn.
The 680sqm homestead, known as Chapelwich, is tucked away in the Porangahau countryside in the south of Hawkes Bay and is marketed by Property Broker’s agent Bevan Pickett and Barfoot & Thompson agent Sebastian Nillson for price by negotiation.
The original family house was built by George Hunter Junior, son of Wellington's first mayor George Hunter. George Junior was one of ten children of George and Helen, who arrived in Wellington in 1840. Father and son were involved in commerce, the son purchasing Porangahau Station in the late 1850's.

The family chapel was added in the 1870’s. In the 1920s, the orginal homestead burnt down, rebuilt in the current style. It stayed in the Hunter family until 1986.
The current owners took over in 2014, sharing the homestead as a bed and breakfast and venue for big celebrations.
The chapel and the garden are often used for wedding ceremonies with guests staying over in the five-suites which can host up to 12 people.
Agent Bevan Pickett says the “majestic” property was a rare listing and a big opportunity for potential buyers.
The building still retained its original integrity and character even after renovations.
“It’s a great chance to get out of the concrete jungle of Auckland.”
The seven-hectare property on Porangahau Beach has big potential for development, he says.
“There’s a lot of land here to build on and to have a play with. You can live there and be self-efficient.”
The stunning retreat was only half an hour away from Waipukarau and an hour drive to Napier and Havelock North.
