With a young child and a baby on the way, this family was on the hunt for a large, comfortable home that could accommodate all the life, love and energy that comes with having young kids.

“The moment we walked in, it instantly felt warm and homely. We had a baby on board and a toddler who was full of energy, so we were looking for a home that would fit our big lives,” the owner says.

“Five bedrooms and three bathrooms meant there was plenty of room inside, plus the large lawn outside meant the kids would always have plenty of room to run around. It had a lot of potential for our family, and we knew we just had to have it.”

6 Ormonde Road, in Remuera, is on the market for sale by auction on May 15. The five-bedroom, three-bathroom property has a 2021 RV of $3.45 million and, according to OneRoof data, last changed hands in 2018 for $2.9m.

The owners made one tweak to the property and that was to turn the backyard into a kid’s – and an entertainer’s – paradise.

“When we moved in, the backyard was on a bit of a slope, so we put in a retainer wall and flattened it out, planted some trees and put in a playground for the kids,” the owner says.

“For the adults, we expanded the deck, put in louvres and an outdoor fireplace, installed lighting, and created a really functional entertaining area. We’ve spent many evenings out there BBQing over the fireplace and entertaining with friends while the kids go crazy in the garden.”

The other side of the house offers a completely different outlook.

“The front deck is a totally different vibe to the back. It’s a lovely spot to just sit and relax. We’ve enjoyed many spring and summer evenings out there enjoying a bit of downtime at the end of the day.”

Inside, the house is perfectly configured for a large family. Downstairs, multiple living areas offer plenty of room for everyone.

“In winter, the lounge is super cosy when the fire is going. It’s a lovely spot to curl up with a good book while the elements are raging outside. There’s lots of old character in there too which is in excellent condition, which really adds to that cosy feeling,” the owner says.

“The study is one of my favourite spots in the house. There’s a wonderful view out the window which is a bit distracting when you’re trying to work.”

Ormonde Road is a quiet street that’s positioned back from the main road but close enough to all the best bits of Remuera Village, with the motorway just a short drive down the road. Nearby, two parks provide plenty of entertainment for the kids.

“I’ll often go for a run and the kids will come with me on their bikes, and we’ll head down to the park for a play.”
