When the founder of a successful construction company went to build a dream home for himself, his wife and their grown-up children, only the very best would do and the sensational five-bedroom, four-bathroom, executive masonry home at sought-after Gulf Harbour – with its very own 16-metre marina, is testament to that commitment.
“It’s truly been built to last,” says the owner of 26 Rue d’Amarres, Gulf Harbour. “The mid-floors are all concrete and there’s double-glazing right throughout for quiet and warmth.”
He says that in hindsight there is nothing at all that he would change if he and his wife were doing it all again, and he’s especially proud of the brand-new Italian porcelain tiled kitchen, complete with a scullery so keen entertainers can keep food preparation out of sight.
“It’s the ultimate in luxury.”

Also on the ground floor are a huge living and dining area, surrounding the kitchen, and other standout features include a covered internal patio, which is perfect for rest and recreation in all weathers. Two huge bedrooms enjoy access to the fully-tiled family bathroom and there’s also a home office.
Meanwhile the main home’s master suite, on the second floor, above the expansive living area, is the height of
five-star elegance. It has a huge walk-in wardrobe and luxury bathroom plus stunning views across the marina, all the way back to Auckland and its Sky Tower, which looks especially attractive when the city lights are on at night.
The 450sqm property also features a separate self-contained apartment, which has its own spacious kitchen, dining and living zone.
While the owners are understandably proud of their achievements here, they say that they aren’t getting any younger and are looking to downsize to a less roomy property.

“While of course we just love the house, I think what we’ll miss most of all is the ease of access to our marina out the front, being boat-lovers,” he says.
“You can practically spit into the water from the front deck, and it’s always still and glassy. It’s fantastic being able to launch on a whim for some fishing or just a general sail around.”
He adds that the property is just 60 seconds or so from Gulf Harbour Village, which has cafes, restaurants, and a celebrated Four-Square store.
“Our children are grown-up, but living at home, and this has been perfect for us all as they have their own private spaces within the house, but it would also be an ideal home for a young family, with Wentworth College and Wentworth Primary right nearby.”

While Mark Wilson from Unlimited Potential, Remuera reports that properties with their own marinas are very rarely put up for sale in the Gulf Harbour area, he sold one, across the road at 17 Rue d’Amarres, late last year for $3.388 million.
“It was a lovely property too, but in a lower price bracket,” he says, adding that 26 Rue d’Amarres is already attracting attention from serious buyers looking in the vicinity of $5m-plus. “Where else could you sit in your lounge or bedroom and look at your own boat? It’s just the most wonderful home.”
