Anne, family friend of the owners of this sunny, north-facing elevated seaside sanctuary, who has recently overseen a significant refurbishment of the property, says that she knows the house well and loves every single aspect, including – most particularly – the incredible views.
“You walk into the house and your eye is drawn forward to the captivating Sandspit Harbour scene where nature ebbs and flows constantly,” she says.
“It’s a 180-degree view and you can see the Matakana and Glen Eden rivers and all the way over to Mount Tamahunga – it’s just mesmerising.”
She explains that the local community is very eco-minded, maintaining tracks, eradicating pests and generally encouraging environmental responsibility, which means the birdlife is prolific.

“And they’re so confident. Recently two kererū posed happily for ages, for me, while I photographed them!”
The three-level property sits on a terraced site with easy access from the road and an internally accessed double garage.
Well-constructed in the 1980s, and much enhanced since then, the spacious and thoughtfully designed bespoke home has a wraparound viewing deck and multiple living spaces.
A timeless native timber theme flows through polished floors in the dining room and kitchen, while the flooring in the large, luxurious lounge with its enormous skylight, is slate. Much of the rest of the house has been upgraded over recent years.

The kitchen is bright and cheery with nautically inspired blue cabinetry.
“We did think about changing the colour but it’s so lovely we decided to leave it, and a new owner can go for a different shade if they want to,” says Anne.
She notes that the home is ideal for a large family, with all four bedrooms on the main level enjoying their own ensuites, so there’s never a race to use the facilities.
On the top level, a huge rumpus or fifth bedroom has a substantial home office adjacent and a private balcony, while on the lower level there is yet another living area plus a storeroom and toilet.
This level opens to a veranda with spa pool and an outdoor shower. There’s plenty of off-street parking with a separate boat or camper park with wash down.

Anne says the owner has been a keen gardener and the carefully chosen plantings that surround the property are all very well-established.
“She especially loves the olive grove and the orchard.”
Anne says Sandspit is a largely undiscovered gem, affordable coastal with easy connection to Matakana village and area beaches.
Jeneen Binsted and Jane Hulme – from Cooper & Co, Harcourts, Warkworth – are marketing the property and point out that it is close to Sandspit Marina and the wharf, which has a boat launch facility and is effectively a gateway to Kawau Bay.
“What we really love about this desirable coastal home is the exceptional views and the fact it’s so neatly tucked into a perfectly sheltered spot,” says Jeneen.
