The owners of a Wellington home overlooking a beach popular with nudists are raving about the view. Not naked sunbathers – they all congregate at the far end of the beach – but the daily stream of whales, dolphins and seals.

Jane and Stephen, who are selling the three-bedroom coastal retreat at 118 Breaker Bay Road, in Breaker Bay, for $1.795 million-plus, told OneRoof they often found themselves staring out of the window.

“My husband works from home,” Jane said. “I’m not sure he gets much work done. It’s too easy to flick the jug on and realise you’ve been standing there for 15 minutes just staring at the ocean. Quite often, I have to tell him to go back to work.”

She added: “There’s something every day to look at. On glorious sunny days, it’s breathtaking. And on rough days, wow.

“Our first cruise ship season was a sight to behold. I’m just blown away by the sheer size of them. I became a real aficionado of which boat was which and how many passengers it had.”

Unfortunately, Stephen, an ex-navy man, gets seasick, so the pair are unlikely to be taking a cruise any time soon.

The couple moved to Wellington three years ago for work and business. Having lived on the coast in Taranaki, they were looking for something similar when they chanced upon Breaker Bay. “We didn’t even know this coastline existed,” said Jane. “We just got in the car, had a drive around, and spotted the for sale sign.”

It was love at first sight, and even once they discovered Breaker Bay’s nudist fame, it didn’t faze them. “I don’t think I was aware when we first looked at the house. But everything’s available on the internet, and the minute that you put Breaker Bay in, it’s one of the things that comes up,” Jane said.

The nudists tend to keep themselves to themselves, she added. “You can quite happily walk on the beach without being surrounded by nudists. If you want to be amongst it, you’ll go down to that end of the beach. If you don’t, you’ll avoid it.”

Jane, who runs online pet supplies store Felix & Fido from home, will be sad to leave Wellington. However, her husband’s scaffolding and blast painting business has ramped up in Taranaki, where they originally came from.

Lowe & Co listing agent Annie Newell, who sold the home to Jane and Stephen, said the original 1940s structure had been extended several times over the years. “Each owner has put their love into it,” she told OneRoof.

“They’ve embellished it, [and] they’ve maintained it. It has always been really well looked after, which is amazing.”

Newell said the home’s aspect made it especially desirable. “It’s super sheltered. So, on those days when it’s raging, even out on the road, you go out the courtyard and go, ‘wow, there’s not a breath of wind here’. And the sun’s beaming down on it. It’s one of those special places.”

While the home has excellent views of the hills and beyond, it is set up from the road making it very private.

Newell said the property had attracted interest from families with teenage children to surfers and divers. “I haven’t had anyone proclaiming to be a nudist, I have to say,” she said. “But that’s something that people tend to keep to themselves. We have had people who love the beach. They may be attracted to the proximity [of the nudist end of the beach]. It’s hard to know.”
