Armed with extensive global experience in hotel development, Derrek Anderson has joined Colliers as the Director of Hotel Valuation and Brokerage.
Anderson will work as the brokerage lead for Colliers as part of a specialised team that includes Chris Bennett, Director of Hotel Advisory & Valuation.
“This is an exciting opportunity to work in another corner of the hotel sector and I am really looking forward to building on my existing connections in the industry in this role at Colliers,” Anderson says.
“The hotel sector is where I have spent a majority of my professional career and it is a dynamic space that is filled with great people.”

Anderson completed a Bachelor of Management Studies at the University of Waikato before joining the workforce in the mid-1990s where he held roles in finance before heading off on his OE.
It was in London where he joined the Hilton organisation via an agency where one of his first tasks was working on a merger of approximately 40 hotels that had been acquired by Hilton.
From there his career flourished as he held finance-related positions in London, Singapore, Tokyo, and Dubai.
More recently he worked in hotel development across Africa and was based in Cape Town in South Africa, which involved taking ideas from the early planning phases and supporting the organisation’s development partners through to the completion of the property.
These complex projects included engaging with potential partners for Hilton and sourcing new hotel deals and opportunities for the brand.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time working offshore but it’s great to be back in New Zealand and I look forward to being able to utilise my existing global network to help connect the right people to deliver the best possible outcomes for our clients.”
Tourism numbers in New Zealand continue to make a steady recovery year-on-year following the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic with the total number of international visitors in the year to June 2024 sitting at 3.21 million, according to data from Stats NZ.
Overseas visitor arrivals for the June 2024 month were 185,300, an increase of 6,900 from the June 2023 month.
“There is a combination of factors in play that will contribute to future transactions in the hotel market, but the recent cut to the Official Cash Rate and the likelihood of further cuts before the end of the year bodes well for the sector,” Anderson says.
“This is all underpinned by a recovery in the tourism market and visitor numbers are steadily returning to pre-Covid levels.”
Charles Cooper, Auckland Managing Director at Colliers, says improving market sentiment aligning with a drop in interest rates means Anderson has joined Colliers at the right time.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome Derrek to Colliers and believe his intricate knowledge of the hotel sector will put him in a strong position to succeed in his new role,” Cooper says.
“He is a people-focused person who has shown a strong ability to build meaningful relationships with clients and his global network will prove hugely valuable.
“We look forward to watching his career flourish as he accelerates the success of our clients.”
