The Shangri La building is one of the most iconic landmarks on the Ponsonby skyline, with its striking balconies and endless glass.
Now, there are not one but two opportunities to claim a slice of this luxurious building as your own.
Shangri La at 97 Jervois Road in Herne Bay, Auckland, is a tightly held complex of luxury apartments that feature spectacular views right across the City of Sails. Apartments 9 and 10 are now on the market.
Owner Heather can’t imagine living anywhere else.

“We were living in an apartment in Remuera but we weren’t completely sold on apartment living, so we sold up and moved into a large home,” she recalls.
“But we wanted the flexibility to travel overseas too, so having a large home with a large garden that needed lots work changed to wanting a low-maintenance, lock-up-and-leave option. We discovered this building, and since then we’ve never looked back.”
Both 9 and 10 feature 294sqm of available space (including balconies), exclusive to that floor. A coded lift opens directly into each apartment. Large living spaces optimise unmatched 360-degrees views of Auckland City and beyond, while a large kitchen makes catering for large gatherings through to intimate affairs effortless.
“Living here is like having the large, Remuera home but you don’t have to look after anything. You have all the nice services you need for comfortable living and entertaining, but at a moment’s notice you could lock everything up and go anywhere in the world if you wanted to.
“The flexibility that living here offers us is incomparable.”
The views across the Waitematā Harbour, out to Rangitoto Island, across the city, around to the Waitākere Ranges, and back to the North Shore takes people’s breaths away.
“The moment I walked in, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The cityscape coupled with the seascape is truly spectacular. I haven’t known anyone who has visited or stayed with us who hasn’t absolutely loved this place.”
Tennis is a big part of Heather’s life. Conveniently, she can work on her backhand at home.
“We go to the ASB Classic every year and my family comes back from overseas most years to attend too. I play a bit too, and the court here is beautiful to play on.
“Whenever the grandchildren come over, they love getting their balls and racquets out too, as well as taking a dip in the pool and spa.”
A unique opportunity is available to someone who wants to purchase both 9 and 10. The top-and-below apartments have identical floorplans, and the two could be joined by installing an internal stairwell.
Barfoot & Thompson agent Jill Jackson, who is marketing both apartments, says the opportunity to live in this building doesn’t happen often, with just 15 apartments in the building.
“The views are certainly arresting and the apartments are really spacious. There is plenty of scope to make improvements to customise the units or enjoy them just as they are,” she says.
“At these prices, they are difficult to beat on the current market.”
Asking prices are $4.9 million for apartment 9 and $5.2m for apartment 10.
