A sunny triple-aspect two-bedroom apartment in the iconic Chambers & Station development has come to market for only the first time since it was initially completed, around 2016.
4/64 Valley Road in Mount Eden, Auckland is listed for auction on June 9 by Harry Champtaloup of Ray White’s Remuera branch, who says the apartment is attracting significant interest. The apartment has a June 2021 ratings valuation of $1.725 million.
Well-known developer Nigel McKenna undertook the project, transforming the iconic 1913 Auckland Borough Council Chambers and the former Mount Eden Fire Station next door – built in 1925 – into an exclusive residential enclave, consisting of just six luxury units on a handy corner site, opposite Mount Eden Normal School.
Strengthening and construction provided a number of significant challenges as McKenna sought to retain heritage features in all of the newly-formed apartments, merging two discrete buildings which had quite different styles, despite being built only about 12 years apart.

The current owner of apartment four says that he and his wife came to Mount Eden from a large property at Dairy Flat – attracted by a complete contrast with their previous lifestyle. They were the first residents in the development, prior to its completion and say that it has a strong community spirit.
“The other apartment owners are professionals or ex-professionals, and we hold social occasions together – everything is very cordial.”

At 107sqm, the floor area is modest, but the soaring ceilings make it feel much bigger and the layout has been carefully planned to maximise space. Both bedrooms are generous, with the main bathroom and ensuite positioned adjacent to one another at the core of the apartment.
In an open-plan zone, the elegant kitchen with its marble benchtops and quality appliances segues seamlessly to the dining area and living space, then onwards to the deck and exterior courtyard which effectively functions as an outdoor room complete, with a spa pool and fireplace.
It is situated neatly over the entrance to the secure underground parking space where the apartment has two car spaces allocated.
The vendors say that during their time in residence they have barely needed to use their vehicles with Dominion Road, which is home to a wide range of easily affordable eateries at one end of Valley Road, while Mount Eden Village, with its more upmarket establishments, lies at the other.

“The apartment is incredibly sunny, which has kept our power bills to an absolute minimum. We can access bus services about 50 metres walk away and be in Queen Street within minutes and getting Mount Eden for a brisk walk is quick and easy too.”
They are moving elsewhere to be closer to family – albeit a little sadly, they say, and agent Champtaloup says that despite a currently challenging property market, their apartment is attracting significant interest.
“It’s a beautifully quiet home and the native trees at the school across the road give it a lovely green view.”
He says that the quality of the original building’s transformation is unsurpassed, with McKenna’s close attention to detail.
“This apartment deserves a new owner who appreciates and cherishes the style and elegance, which can’t be replicated,” Champtaloup says.
