For fans of Westside and Outrageous Fortune, the iconic West Auckland property at 85 Royal View Road is instantly recognisable.

But with the final ever episodes of Westside currently screening on Three, the home is about to embark on a brand-new story arc – minus the jail time.

85 Royal View Road in Te Atatū South will soon be developed into seven new homes: five two-bedroom terraced houses, one two-bedroom standalone house, and one three-bedroom standalone house.

The two-storey, classic circa 1960s brick property has been a staple on local television screens for over 15 years. It was first home to career criminal Wolf West and wife Cheryl in the South Pacific Pictures series Outrageous Fortune, which ran from 2005 until 2010. After a brief hiatus from stardom, the home again appeared on our screens in Westside, the prequel to Outrageous Fortune, which chronicles the lives of Wolf’s parents, Rita and Ted West, and introduces viewers to young Cheryl, Wolf and other characters.

In real life, the home has been used as a backdrop and filming location since 2005.

The townhouses are marketed by Paul Berry and Frank Liang from Barfoot & Thompson Royal Height. Berry says that while the home is an integral part of the onscreen West family, offscreen it’s also very much a family affair.

“85 Royal View Road has been a family-owned property for well over 30 years,” he says. “Within the last 12 months, my vendor, Richard Jones, purchased the home from his parents privately. He has started his own property development company, The Development Co, and this development will be his flagship project.”

Berry, himself born and bred in Te Atatū so knows the area like the back of his hand, says that his vendor wants to breathe new life into this family home that has been cherished by both his family and Westside fans, while paying homage to the history of the property and the show.

As part of the agreement with South Pacific Pictures, Richard and his family have agreed to keep the home standing until the final episodes of Westside have aired.

At the height of the show’s popularity the house attracted a lot of attention, despite producers doing their best to keep the location under wraps. Once, a group of motorbikes parked their bikes all over the front lawn for a group photo. Fans still visit the street to take selfies.

“Property development is something that Richard has always wanted to do, and now that the final episodes of Westside are in the can, it’s the right time.

“It’s also important to Richard that he respects the property and area’s roots," Berry says.

Jones' development of buy off the plans in an iconic part of West Auckland has prices starting from $650,000.

“These homes, and Richard's future developments, will pay thoughtful attention to the details that really make a house a home, and fall into the affordable house bracket to make it easier for first-home buyers to get into the housing market," says Berry.

"These new houses will feel right at home in West Auckland.”

Berry says this is an exciting opportunity to buy a slice of iconic West Auckland land, without the hefty price tag that you might expect from other parts of Auckland.

“My vendor is really excited to take his family home, which means so much to so many other people too, on its next journey.”

The sixth and final season of Westside is currently airing on Mondays at 8:30pm on Three.
