An overworked, underfunded, and under resourced public mental health service has led to excruciatingly long wait times for young people needing immediate help. Gumboot Friday was designed to meet the needs of young people. Using fully qualified, licensed practitioners from the private sector, young people can book a session at gumbootfriday.com and in 3 clicks of a button, they are more often than not seen within a week.
Since April 2019, Gumboot Friday has raised over 6 million dollars for free kids counselling. From this they have paid for over 42,821 sessions for just under 20,000 kids. The average cost per session is $150 and they anticipate that with the money they have raised that they will be able to help a further 40,000 – 50,000 young Kiwis to access the help they need.
Join us on Friday, 3rd November from 12:00pm to be part of the Great Gumboot Friday Gala Auction. Featuring 7 properties up for auction, it is sure to be an action-packed day. Shane Cortese, Harcourts’ experienced Group Auctioneer, will be calling the auctions and has generously committed to donating 10% of the auction fee to the Gumboot Friday appeal. He’ll also be conducting two charity auctions, available for the public to bid on with all proceeds from both charity auctions being donated to the Gumboot Friday appeal.
In addition to the Auction events taking place on the day, the Harcourts team will be hosting our annual Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser between 10am and 2pm on Friday the 3rd for a gold coin donation, and welcome everyone to come along to 35 Robert Street, Whangarei Central.

Over the next few weeks, you’ll see Blue Gumboots and Collection Buckets around various stores and businesses in the Whangarei area, who will be collecting any spare change on behalf of the Harcourts team. Each business has also sponsored $150 which equates to one free counselling session for young New Zealanders. A very special thanks to the businesses who have joined with us to fundraise, to see a full list of our sponsors visit harcourtswhangarei.co.nz/gumboot-friday.
Our very own Harcourts Sales Agent, Valerie Hanger is taking on a challenge of her own, walking up 5 summits to raise money for Gumboot Friday on Friday, 3rd November. The five summits she will be walking up are:
- Te Whara Track (450 metres)
- Mt Lion (395 metres)
- Mount Manaia (420 metres)
- Mount Aubrey (216 metres)
- Barge Park to the Nowhere Tree (350 metres)
Valerie will be completing all of these in just one day, a total elevation gain of 1,821 metres. She believes in making positive changes in our communities and helping those who need it most, as getting outdoors in the fresh air can be one of the great tools to use when you’re struggling with mental health. NCC Consulting has pledged to donate $100 per summit, any other business who would like to pledge toward Valerie’s 5 Summits for Mental Health, please get in touch with us.
Alternatively, you can support Valerie by donating via our givealittle page. Keep an eye on the Harcourts Whangarei and Bream Bay Facebook Page for updates and to see the progress of Valerie’s amazing challenge.
