Linda Trainer, general manager of asset management for Kiwi Property, fell in love with the four-bedroom home at 9 Young Street, in Mahurangi East, seven years ago.
Trainer said her husband, Jon, felt the same way. "We walked in the door, looked at each other, and went, 'This is the most amazing house.' We knew straight away.”

The 245sqm four-bedroom Hamptons-style house sits on an over 4000sqm section surrounded by lawns and established trees and The couple had friends in the neighbourhood and had been tipped off that the house was coming to market, so they made the speedy decision to sell their Remuera home and make an offer.
The 245sqm four-bedroom Hamptons-style house sits on a 4000sqm section that slopes down to the water. “We just knew it would be impossible to find anything else like that in Auckland: waterfront, a nice home, and a boat ramp,” Trainer said. “We’ve got huge views of the water.”
Even before the new Auckland to Warkworth motorway opened two years ago, Trainer and her husband realised they could still work in the city but have an “amazing life right on the water”.
The couple revealed they had given the house a makeover. “We wanted to make changes to reflect our personality. The location is so unique, it deserved to have the amenity.”

The renovations include a new kitchen with marble counters, an American oak fireplace, new shutters in the sunroom, an opulent ensuite in the master bedroom, and ducted air conditioning. Outside, the couple put in new shingles and copper spouting.
The main living room has a vaulted ceiling, and there are two other living areas and three bathrooms.
“The house really is designed for entertaining because there are so many places to go. It’s a very happy house.”

The 120sqm deck and outdoor entertaining area, and fireplace were Jon’s lockdown project (the timber was delivered just days before the city shut down). Trainer was busy keeping Kiwi Properties retail and office assets working, and she laughed that her colleagues got used to Jon’s hammering in the background of their frequent Zoom calls.
There is a guest cottage for yoga, a garden house and potager garden beds. The boatshed and storage sheds have been pressed into service for Jon’s several boats.
“We have a variety of dinghies through to sailing boats, and a boat that’s moored in the harbour. Then there are paddle boards, kayaks. It’s a dream living on the water. I go fishing too off the end of our jetty, and there’s the neighbourhood sandy swimming beach about a one-minute walk away.
“In the motorboat we can be at Kawau Island in less than an hour.”
She added: “It’s a fabulous community. When we lived in the city, we probably knew five or six neighbours, here we’d know probably 40. It’s super social. There are regular Friday night drinks or dinners. Everyone looks after each other.
“We love it and we’ll miss it. But after seven years, it’s time for a change. We’re just looking to see what the next steps are."
Bayleys listing agent Kellie Bissett said that 9 Young Street was possibly the most peaceful waterfront location you could hope to find in her patch.
“It is an investment in tranquillity," she said. Her advertising says the estate is “one of the most iconic landholdings in the area” and notes the property has no covenants.
“It is difficult to imagine a more perfect ‘1 acre’ where you can put your boat in the water from your own ramp. For those who have been looking for the ultimate property, it has to be said that the boat ramp and boat shed combination offers loads of opportunity to an astute purchaser.”
