Former Remuera residents with strong connection to this area, Ginny and husband Pat, have evolved an impressive, view-laden Leigh property from its bed-and-breakfast roots to a magnificent and luxurious 487sqm family home.

140 Rodney Road in Leigh, Rodney, is on the market for sale by a set date, closing December 15. The expansive seven-bedroom, five-bathroom home with 12 hectares has an RV of $4.075 million. According to OneRoof data, it last changed hands in 2020 for $3,588,888.

“My dad was a commercial fisherman on the Kaipara Harbour,” Ginny says. “So I grew up around here and have continued to feel like a bit of a country girl, wandering around our previous Remuera garden in my red bands.

“We fell in love with this property when it was for sale about 12 years ago but that timing didn’t work as we’d recently put our children into Meadowbank School.”

The children had grown up by the time it was for sale two years ago, allowing the couple to pursue their vision which included ridding elements of its BnB legacy. They’ve impeccably renovated it as their own sophisticated family home.

The homestead was built in 1997 as a premium BnB, its previous owners purchased it as a holiday home and its large separate shed with stables has been used as a wedding venue, yoga studio, artist’s den and to store a car collection.

Ray White listing agent Ross Hawkins says: “This stunning renovation has made a local iconic home magnificent. The incredible views over the property and across Pakiri Beach to the new Te Arai Links golf courses and Tara, all the way around to Whangarei Heads to the Hen and Chicken Islands, really blow you away when arrive here.

“Your friends can pick you up on their way past when heading to golf by helicopter.”

The home, sitting on 12 hectares, isn’t visible from the road. The couple regularly swim at Matheson Bay, head to Leigh Sawmill or Warkworth and Ginny can drive to a North Shore mall if needed in around an hour.

“The setting, on rolling green hills with exquisite elevated views, is magical but we didn’t feel the home previously quite measured up as a sophisticated family home in terms of layout, facilities and finishes,” Ginny says.

“Now it does and we’re so proud of what we’ve done here.”

They wanted the formerly luminous white exterior to sit more gently in the landscape, repainting it pale grey with burgundy trim and sculpting level lawn in front. There’s a new outdoor area with fireplace and spa pool.

The re-painted, rejuvenated interior has ducted air-conditioning. The foyer with grand staircase and six skylights introduces four key rooms, all with fireplaces and re-polished tawa flooring.

These include a family room, formal living room, TV room and a sumptuous but family-friendly new kitchen-dining hub with marble-topped island and butler’s pantry. An office, laundry, w.c. plus internal-access double garaging complete this level.

They found upstairs’ previous layout disjointed so unified it. Its seven bedrooms include the master with dressing room amongst three ensuited ones, complemented by two more bathrooms and a w.c. All bathrooms have been luxuriously renovated, eliminating a Tuscan-themed specimen with corner spa bath.

Grounds abundant with birdlife harbour multiple paddocks, a horse arena, pond, rotunda and quaint sauna cottage. Subdivision is underway to create an additional title.

However, the couple are now Bay of Plenty-bound for Pat’s aquaculture business, planning to also keep a smaller property around this locale.
