The owners of Greystone have always given their homes a name, and this home was no exception – a crowning gesture awarded to the architectural masterstroke at Mellons Bay.
The owners have counted many achievements, but Greystone, which is for sale by way of tender, closing March 8, is one of their proudest.
Devised in collaboration with celebrated Auckland architect William Algie, the 1422sqm home is set upon a sprawling waterfront site within a gated community.
Defined by craftmanship, quality, magnificently detailed spaces, and an instantly recognisable Frank Lloyd Wright influence. The home was completed in 2014, following the removal of the original 1950s ranch style home.

“It’s the extensive water views, expansive lawns, privacy and private location in an exclusive enclave that are its special feature,” the owner says. “It’s fantastic, away from the madding crowd.”
With an already established and successful relationship with Algie on earlier projects, he was the natural choice to conceive Greystone; the owner describing him as, “a genius in design and detail – the library being an example of his unique ability to transcend time and revisit classic interiors of the past.”
Certainly, the elaborate library is breathtaking. The owner happily admits it was an indulgence and an unconditional part of the architectural brief.

Both the library and formal Napoleonic dining room detailed with liberal amounts of American oak, paired with heritage greens and reds respectively are unquestionably the home’s centrepieces.
“The dining hall has been the site of many exclusive and formal dinner parties with friends and business associates,” the owner says.
Off-setting the library and formal dining room’s grandeur, the large kitchen and dining area with white walls, endless windows and light denote a relaxed coastal charm.
The space opens onto generous covered entertaining areas overlooking the home’s heated pool and incomparable sea views.

Lifelong collectors of rare and beautiful pieces of international provenance, the owners applied the same enthusiasm and discernment when sourcing the fittings and materials for Greystone.

In particular, the stained-glass windows and immaculate stonework that feature throughout the home, the latter executed by notable Auckland stonemason Len Lavas.
The home’s exterior is a marriage of stone and cedar shingles beneath a copper roof. The extensive home offers four bedrooms, four bathrooms, four powder rooms, multiple living areas and a vast seven-car garage.

“We’ve had so much enjoyment in this exceptional home which has provided every facility for large and small gatherings, formal and informal events, pool parties and family gatherings,” the owner says.
Bayleys agent Angela Rudling, who is marketing the property with colleague Michael Chi, says, “this is irrefutably one of the finest homes in New Zealand, masterfully built in a spectacular waterfront location, within 40 minutes’ drive of Auckland’s CBD.”
