Lois and family watched this contemporary beach home with two-way water and rural views being built from their previous Omaha property, and were impressed by the way it was crafted.
“When it came on the market my son and I looked through it, came out and both said in unison ‘I could live in that house’,” she says.

Lois is a grandmother who bought this property with one of her two sons to serve dual purposes. It’s effectively her permanent home while one Auckland-based son and his family use it as their holiday home.
“When we were first looking for something outside of Auckland, we made up our minds it’d need to be within an hour’s travelling time otherwise you don’t use it enough on the spur of the moment,” Lois says.
“My family can get up here within 55 minutes, which means my other son finds it easy just to pop up here for lunch. And when the new motorway is finished that’ll shorten the trip further.”

Number 38 has views front and back, both out to Little Barrier and over the Omaha Golf Course. Designed by MRA Ltd, it was completed in 2014, with Lois and son buying it not long after in 2015.
A pathway across the road gets you to the beach in a couple of minutes and this property’s rear gate provides access to the golf course. The home’s exterior mixes aluminium, cedar and concrete block while its interior showcases clean lines, a honed stack-bonded block wall and plywood feature ceilings.
“The sun streams in the front of the house in the morning and then by the afternoon has travelled around the back where upstairs’ deck and second lounge are,” Lois says. “We see the most beautifully coloured sunsets.”
Lois loves to cook in the upstairs’ open-plan living-dining-kitchen, which extends right through the home and features a four-metre-long stainless steel-topped island. This open-plan area and the second lounge flow out to the big, west-facing rear deck.

Completing this upper level are an ensuited front master bedroom, a second bedroom and a bathroom. Downstairs has two more bedrooms, another bathroom, the laundry, the third living room and the extra-long, internal-access garage. This has plenty of storage space and is drive-through, providing easy access to the fenced backyard where there’s room to add a swimming pool if desired.
Lois initially trialed living in Omaha by renting, finding she loved the Matakana Coast’s art, cafes, scenery and cinemas. She still drives but at her age she feels it’d be practical to live close to medical specialists she’s frequented. Combined with this, some of her grandchildren are often busy with Auckland-based weekend commitments including sports, so Lois and her son have decided to sell.
Bayleys agent Victoria Turner, who is marketing 38 Mangatawhiri Road with Joneen Smith, says: “This impressively built family beach home with a high stud and lots of light and sunshine offers relaxed and effortless living and a great floorplan.”
