“The drive was easy after the kids’ Saturday morning sport. We could arrive early afternoon Saturday and enjoy the rest of the weekend at the beach or out on the water,” the vendor says.

“Over the time we’ve owned it we’ve renovated the kitchen, bathrooms, upgraded the bedrooms, added floating stairs to the roof deck, built a glass roofed loggia in the courtyard, added fireplaces inside and outside, and installed automated driveway access, which is great for putting the boat away; the list goes on.

“We’re suckers for a good renovation – we just can’t help ourselves,” the vendor says.

The result is a strikingly modern home, stylish, yet subtle – allowing the ocean to be the star, with floor to ceiling stackable glass sliders encased in retractable architectural screens. This gives privacy, while allowing light and air flow to permeate. The sleek and streamlined new kitchen, housed on the ground level, is ideal for a seasoned entertainer, whilst retaining an air of breezy coastal cool.

There’s masses of space for entertaining a crowd – both inside and out, with the addition of a stunning courtyard and dining area, complete with fireplace. Three separate sitting rooms and an internal access garage complete this level.

The vast master suite, as well as a second guest suite, both enjoy private access to this roof deck. Meanwhile, three further bedrooms – including a bunkroom – lie at the rear of the first floor.

The owners and their family have made good use of the excellent local amenities, especially the tennis club and the famed Omaha Beach Golf Club, which has been putting particular emphasis on encouraging a younger generation of golfers onto its greens and fairways.

The vendor says that Omaha has really blossomed. “Back in the early 2000s we had to go to Point Wells for bread, milk and a newspaper but it’s very different here now, with a well-stocked superette, choice of cafes and restaurants, and Nomad for some beach-inspired clothing and homewares.”

She says that the new Farmers Daughter café on the causeway has been a huge drawcard, as is the local Matakana township, and Aucklanders are noticing that the newly opened motorway link has carved around 15 minutes off their journey from the city.

Their children are adults now, and heading overseas, so reluctantly it’s time to let the big home go. Another family can get busy making memories.

“Luckily we made many dear friends here over the years, perhaps they will invite us to stay with them sometime!”

Listing agent Patrick McAteer, from New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty, says the attention to detail is second to none.

“They’ve made these clever changes on the basis of their experience living in the house. Aspects such as the cantilevered master bedroom are sensational, while the pergola in the open aired central entertainment area allows for alfresco dining all year-round,” McAteer says.
