A classic Remuera home that has served as the Auckland retreat for the New York-based CEO of a worldwide advertising agency is on the market for sale.

The three-bedroom home at 4 Burwood Crescent was created by noted Kiwi architect Terry Hitchcock and has been significantly upgraded by the vendors since purchasing it in 2021 for just under $5m.

Barfoot & Thompson agent Linda Galbraith told OneRoof: “These vendors both have a very aesthetic eye. When they purchased here they spent significant money remodelling and upgrading it to suit their tastes and requirements.”

Hitchcock's 273sqm two-storey cedar home, which sits on 613sqm of land and has a 2021 CV of $4.8 million, has been treasured by those lucky enough to own it. One of the previous owners loved it so much he purchased it for a second time, five years after first selling it.

The current owners picked up the house as a lock-up and leave after selling up a much larger home in neighbouring Greenlane. They’d thought it was practical to purchase somewhere smaller for their Auckland base, rather than leaving a large house sitting empty for long stretches while they were in New York.

Galbraith, who sold their Greenlane home, said: “They were made aware this property could be coming to market and, having admired it previously, knew it would be a perfect fit.

“They viewed it and purchased it that same day. To me, having travelled a lot, this property definitely has a European flavour. But it has been crafted with a lodge feel about it, as you’d find in a beautiful lodge in Millbrook.

“It has fantastic proportions and wonderful light. It’s positioned in one of the most expensive streets in Remuera, a select crescent where a large, waterfront property recently sold for just over $20 million.”

The home is in the prized double grammar zone, but near private schools include St Kentigern and King's prep.

The vendors have installed central heating, a wine cellar, outdoor lighting and automated awnings which can extend out over the rear patio.

Other improvements include repainting the interior, removing a huge stone fireplace from a winter room while transitioning it more into a family-media room and having premium, soft sisal-wool carpet laid.

They’ve also redone the gardens, retaining high perimeter hedging, replacing some tired plants and further evolving their clipped, formal style, making them truly stunning.

Symmetry adds to the initial appeal of this gated property, with two good-sized internal-access single garages (fronted by two secure open-air parks) flanking the recessed front entry.

“Coming down the sandstone steps to the front door and into the extravagantly proportioned, double-height panelled entrance foyer you can see the quality straight away.”

The foyer discreetly feeds the wine cellar, guest powder room and laundry, before flowing into the substantial living-dining-designer kitchen-scullery. The foyer’s beautiful French oak floors continue into this space, which harbours a large wood-burning fireplace.

French doors open this area and the neighbouring family-media room (which previous owners utilised as a fourth bedroom) up wide to the rear patio. This overlooks the private and impeccable west-facing garden with irrigation and central lawn.

Upstairs the ensuited master suite with walk-in-wardrobe enjoys a view extending to Auckland Museum. A family bathroom accompanies two other bedrooms.

This property is conveniently located for Orakei’s basin and village, Benson Road shops, Newmarket, Parnell, Remuera and the CBD.

Linda says the vendors have absolutely loved the time they’ve spend at this property but now they no longer require it they’d like to see it sold at auction, if not before.
