When major refurbishment work on their existing home got underway, several years ago, Ross and Dallas decided to enjoy a temporary change of scenery for the duration of the project and purchased this exciting modern dwelling in fashionable Herne Bay.
Constructed on a generous 511sqm site, in a quiet no-exit street, just a few minutes’ walk from Jervois Road, 5 Salisbury Street comprises around 350sqm, with levels cleverly split to further enhance the remarkable sense of space that prevails throughout.
“We were really attracted to peaceful, private great indoor-outdoor living, with a lovely sunny deck opening off the living area,” says Dallas, who oversaw a garden makeover by celebrated landscape designer Suzanne Turley during the couple’s time in residence.
“We spent a lot of time out there because it’s so cosy and private.”

Another highlight is the heated north-facing outdoor swimming pool.
Dallas says that she also enjoyed the luxurious cook’s kitchen, which features superior Gaggenau appliances and has the added bonus of a scullery where food preparation can be kept out of sight, while a giant island with a deep marble top is a magnet to family and friends.
A bar, equipped with a wine fridge in the living area with its soaring ceiling, is yet another attraction appealing to homeowners who enjoy entertaining at scale or hosting more intimate occasions.

A spectacularly sized bedroom with ensuite lies adjacent to the triple internal-access garage along with a separate laundry and storage room. A further two bedrooms on the first level open to the north-facing garden and share a beautiful bathroom.
The master suite is over-sized and highly sophisticated with an enormous walk-in wardrobe and sumptuous bathroom and a large second living area provides a flexible TV or work-from-home space.
Dallas says that when work on their original home a few streets away was finally completed, she and Ross felt a little torn, wondering momentarily if they should stay in Salisbury Street, where they had been very happy.
“The neighbours are divine and there’s a real community feel – plus there’s the park at the end of the street. They opened the new Countdown on Jervois Road while we were living here, and I loved being able to wander up there.”

Pene Milne, from New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty, says that style and quality were clearly top of mind for this architecturally-designed luxury home when built around eight years ago.
It is the ultimate pedestrian lifestyle with easy access to the vibrant villages.
“This is a very clever design, oriented to sun all day. The pool and bedrooms all face north and the main outdoor living area faces west for the best of the day. It is private, quiet, light-filled and sun-drenched. I just love it.”
5 Salisbury Street in Herne Bay, Auckland, is on the market for sale by auction on May 17.
