The home at 37 Glanville Terrace, Parnell is inarguably a labour of love.

When the owner and her family bought it some 18 years ago, it was the immense character of the home that had them sold.

The renovation that followed was an undertaking and a half, but it remained sensitive to, if not somewhat reinstating the home’s charming 1930s Spanish colonial spirit.

It is a proudly balanced pairing of heritage features and joyful detail with a pragmatic and contemporary extension, resulting in a welcoming family home.

After initiating the upgrade of the home cautiously, the owners took the plunge and tasked architect Mike Roulston with the redesign, which involved an extension and redefining the layout completely.

“We lived in the house for six months, under wrap, it was a major,” says the owner, who subsequently applied her skill in interior decoration to present the home as it is today - gracious and warm.

The entrance courtyard is laid with terracotta bricks and Andalusian tiles, framed with manicured box hedges, rounded topiaries and a classically Spanish Colonial stucco exterior.

Inside, the home’s central point is the expansive lounge and modern kitchen with a sizeable Carrara marble island beneath large skylights.

The area extends out onto a deck which peaks at the landmark Orakei boat sheds and the water.

On the same level, the home’s character snug with stain glass windows and low ceiling provides retreat, particularly in the winter months.

The master bedroom incorporates a walk-in wardrobe following through to the ensuite - in keeping with the other bathrooms’ brass accents and character Artedomus tiles.

The owners have added features that not only remained sensitive to the home’s origins but returned the original character.

Internal wall cladding, and a decorative stair rail produced by Powersurge, known for their innovative metal work, add to the home’s infinite character.

Downstairs provides perfect guest or teenager accommodation.

“It has been fantastic for our two boys over the years, it’s ideal for the separation and space,” the owner says.

Two bedrooms, laundry, an office and bathroom stem from a large living area fronted by French doors and laid with Forté wooden floors.

The area spills onto the home’s second large entertaining deck which overlooks the flat and perfectly laid AstroTurf lawn.

Double Grammar zoned and minutes to Parnell village and the CBD, its position is second to none.

Vicki Wallace of Bayleys, who is marketing the property to be sold at auction says, “This is an outstanding opportunity to secure a chic family home with ample character and charm, located in one of Auckland’s most sought-after suburbs.”

37 Glanville Terrace in Parnell will be sold at auction on July 29.
