There's still heat at the top end of Auckland's property market, with two classic Ponsonby villas fetching a combined $5 million at auction today.

A four-bedroom home sold for $3.375 million - $400,000 above the 2017 CV and nearly five times what the vendors originally paid for it in 2002.

Another villa nearby, a three-bedroom house billed as an "entry-level Ponsonby classic", fetched $1.625 million under the hammer.

Both homes were marketed by Bayleys sales agent Blair Haddow.

The house that sold for $3.375 million was the cover story for OneRoof's listing magazine OneRoof Herald Homes just before lockdown and was described as having a Sistine Chapel-like ceiling.

The vendors told OneRoof at the time that they had made some very dramatic changes to the house since buying it 18 years ago.

One of the highlights was the ornate ceiling in the lounge.

The couple also extended the house at the rear, a process that involved a lot of engineering work to achieve the suspended ceiling, and the back yard includes a stunning swimming pool and lots of greenery.

Haddow described the house as one of the best-looking villas in the area. "This is an extraordinary home, injected with personality and style that reflects the lives of my wonderful clients during 18 years of ownership," he told OneRoof in March.

"The return veranda frontage, elevation and double car garage makes this one of the best-looking villas in our area and with so many features and benefits this is truly a rare opportunity and not to be missed."
