The $27.5 million record still stands. The waterfront mansion at 15 Cremorne Street, in Auckland's Herne Bay, is still the biggest residential property sale of the last 18 months, according to OneRoof-Valocity sales data.
Property developer couple Paula and Simon Herbert bought their Herne Bay home at the end of March 2018.
15 Cremorne Street, Herne Bay, Auckland: Sold for $27.5m.
That sale figure, brokered by agent Graham Wall, has not been topped, although the penthouse in the new city apartment Pacifica is asking $35 million and the penthouse in 51 Albert Street (slated to complete around the same time as the city rail link) sold last month for $13 million.
But in the last six months to March 2019, the top sale was the nice round eight figures of $10 million for a beachfront property on Rata Road, in Devonport, Auckland.
Right on Cheltenham Beach, the house built in 2010 has the traditional weatherboard exterior of the heritage neighbourhood, wrapped around precast concrete strapped and with an anything-but-old five bedrooms, five bathrooms, media room and a whopping eight car garaging. It was sold by Victoria Bidwell, of Bayleys, who specialises in high-end waterfront homes.
10 Rata Road, Cheltenham Beach, Auckland: Sold for $10m.
Through the summer it was beach and waterfront properties that achieved top prices for the year in the Coromandel, Mount Maunganui and the Far North.
Bayleys agents Bev Calder and Sheree Henderson sold an architect-designed modern property on the waterfront at Hahei for $4.05 million in November.
The 298sq m house, built in 2003 had replaced a modest cottage that had been in the family since 1970, and had tropical landscaping that joined house to the beach.
23 Wigmore Crescent, Thames-Coromandel: Sold for $4.05m.
On Mount Maunganui’s prized Ocean Beach, a modest one-bedroom 1960s bach - but sitting on 862sq m of land, including prized pohutukawa trees - sold for $5.5 million. That’s more than double the 2015 CV of $2.074 million, a number that doesn’t surprise Bayleys agent Sharon Hall who sold the property. The family had resisted numerous door-knockers offering to buy in the past, preferring the simple life, Hall said at the time of the auction.
5 Oceanbeach Road, Tauranga: Sold for $5.5 million.
And in the exclusive Orokawa Bay in the Far North, Sotheby’s agent Chester Rendell achieved the top price this year for the area with $6 million for a family compound set out over nearly 6 hectares right on the beach. The classic Hamptons-style main house, guest cottage and bunk room above the boat shed had seven bedrooms, five bathrooms (the bunk room alone sleeps eight) and is accessed by boat.
Orokawa Bay, Bay of Islands: Sold for $6m.
And in Christchurch’s Fendalton, a modern house of over 500 square metres designed in a series of pavilions with steps cascading down to the Avon River, fetched the city’s top price for the year, $4 million, in September. Harcourts agent Alison Aitken says the house was private and secure for the owners who travel frequently (they relocated to Central Otago for business reasons) leaving their 2016 house on over 150sq m.
138A Fendalton Road, Christchurch: Sold for $4m.
And the bargains this summer? The top price in Clutha was an Akatore Road property for $775,000, while Wairoa’s top price, in September was a bargain-in-Auckland $730,000 and a house in Buller’s aptly named Utopia Road achieved the region’s top price of $890,000 in December.
New Zealand's most expensive house sale remains the 2013 $39m sale of a home on Auckland's Paritai Dr to businessman Deyi Shi..
