A lot of houses were built in the 1980s in Auckland but there is only one 1980s house.
12 Atarua Gardens, tucked away in the Waitakere Ranges, is as emblematic of the era as shoulder pads, big hair and Dynasty.
But unlike a lot of things that were produced in that decade, this five-bedroom home has aged remarkably well.

It was designed by award-winning architect Chris Meikle (the brains behind Westfield’s Albany Shopping Centre) and features a resort-style pool surrounded by elegant palm trees - you'd swear you were in Club Tropicana.
Bayleys sales agent Richard Cadness rather aptly describes it as a trophy residence. "First impressions of this dynamic contemporary masterpiece give you a sense of design excellence and luxurious comfort and are a fusion of the first owners inspiration and the talent of their architect," he says.
"They have enhanced the home with high ceilings, a mitred glass atrium capturing the sunlight, feature walls of cedar and rimu and beautiful oak flooring."
Owner John Hatchman says the house "just blows you away when you first see it".
He told TVNZ: "The place has retained a lot of the 80s flavour. It's very original. If you took that away, it would destroy the whole thought and concept behind it. It wouldn't be the house that it is.
"It's brilliant – a brilliant place."
The house is to be auctioned on Wednesday October 17.
