The transformation of what appears at first glance to be an inconspicuous Hibiscus Coast home, admittedly one with good bones, is nothing short of remarkable and vendor Fleur is rightly delighted with the outcome.
“The house was my late mother’s and she was instantly entranced by the stunning vista. She oversaw the substantial kitchen and bathroom renovations and I completed the work, over two years.”
Barely a single aspect of the brick, block and cedar home has been left untouched, and potential buyers have been unanimous in voicing admiration for the chic painted brick exterior, which includes three places to relax in the sun – as well as for the crisp, cool, contemporary, all-white rooms inside.
“What I really like about the property is its flexibility,” says Fleur.

Upstairs is a huge open-plan kitchen, dining and living area with soaring ceilings and exceptional views to the bay beyond, where Rangitoto is undeniably the jewel in the crown. Also on this floor is a bathroom and two bedrooms as well as a spacious separate laundry.
The décor throughout befits the dwelling’s seaside location – it’s very simple and uncomplicated, letting the spectacular lines of the home and vistas outside play the starring role.
Downstairs is a spacious and well-appointed guest wing which could be used for any number of purposes, perhaps as a teenage retreat, accommodation for an elderly relative or even a holiday let for visitors to the ever-popular Whangaparaoa area.
It, too, is bright and breezy and features two generous bedrooms as well as a fresh modern bathroom, kitchenette, laundry and expansive living areas, both inside and out.

“Our family has enjoyed staying here for extended periods with all the great things the area offers,” says Fleur.
“You’re spoilt for choice; the kids love the beach, there’s the reserve to kick a ball, plus many walks and Manly is just a few minutes up the road for great restaurants, shops and cafes.”
She says that her mother was a talented artist and enjoyed hitting the road in her campervan in search of new scenes to commit to canvas.
“For her, this was the ultimate low-maintenance, lock-up-and-leave property – even the garden is designed to require a minimum of effort, while still looking lovely.”
One of Fleur’s favourite parts of the reimagined house is the black and white striped window canopies.

Ben Gibson, from Harcourts Cooper & Co in Orewa, is very impressed with what’s been achieved here.
“It’s so satisfying watching people’s faces when they see inside it for the first time, and I think Fleur’s mother would have loved the gallery-like vibe. Her paintings look incredible on the white walls, with purpose lighting to enhance them.”
He says that the ferry to Auckland is nearby, as well as access to public transport, and locals here enjoy a permanent holiday vibe, with fishing, boating, jet-skiing, nature walks, safe swimming spots and golf – all within easy reach. Matakatia Beach, a true hidden secret, is only a few steps away.
“I do urge people to come and see this special property.”
19 Zita Avenue in Matakatia, Rodney, is on the market for sale and heading to auction on April 8.
