International coffee giant Starbucks is returning to the Christchurch CBD for the first time since 2011.

It will open in Cathedral Square before Christmas, taking space on a prominent corner in Spark Square next to upmarket appliance brand Miele’s showcase store.

Annabelle Bramwell, Retail Leasing Broker at Colliers Christchurch, says Starbucks, the biggest coffee chain in the world, is a welcome addition to the CBD’s retail and hospitality offering.

“Starbucks originally opened in the Christchurch CBD back in 2001 with sites in Cathedral Square and Cashel Street. It’s great to have them back in the central city,” Bramwell says.

“They’ll be a wonderful addition to Cathedral Square, with the store’s location especially well suited to cater for Christchurch’s growing tourist market.”

Starbucks already has Christchurch stores in Riccarton, Hornby, and Northlands but this will be its first CBD store in 13 years.

Michal Haines, Starbucks New Zealand General Manager, says they’re excited to be returning to the Christchurch CBD after so many years away.

“With three sites already in Christchurch, it’s a pleasure to be working on what will be a beautiful prime fourth site opposite the iconic Cathedral landmark, just a stone’s throw from where we once had a store,” Haines says.

“The carefully redeveloped central city is an area we have eagerly sought to be a part of. As a brand that has been in New Zealand for 25 years, we’ve gone through many changes and this new store will be an iconic example of our journey to where we are today.”

The opening of Starbucks’ Cathedral Square store later this year will take its total number of New Zealand stores to 41.
